wow talk about thread derailment, well done guys and girls you have posted nearly a entire page worth of stuff which has absolutly no bearing on the OP and their question - even more so since the OP has stated they are pretty sure they are going for the Revo, and even more considering the OP's next question about printers

now to the OP and your printer question (if you are still here of course) something i would suggest to think about is ink, and the availability, for example i have had the occasionaly situation where my darling children have printed somethings off without telling me afterwards that the ink is running low or has ran out, so when i have come to print somehting of that needs to be sent of the next day or that evening - i am in the brown stuff, now in this instance i am lucky as i made sure my local 24 hour supermarket stocks my printers ink so when i have had this happen to me i can just pop in and pick up the needed ink (usually at a slight price premium but hey when you really need it, a couple of quid extra is nothing)

another thing to think about is usually the cheaper the printer is originally the more expensive the ink will be, also they are more likely to have combine colour cartridges which adds to future expense
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

I, personally, was pointing out how reliable my Mac is and how happy I am with it, even now.

Over 5 years, I think it works out cheaper and simpler to buy a Mac, especially based on the OP's needs....

I have got an Apple and they've never told me what to do with it. I use it just like any other PC I've ever owned.

How do they tell you what to do with their stuff?

Ok can I buy OSX? Yes.
    Do I own it???
If I do own it can I install it on my laptop? Or are apple dictating what I can do with it?

The above is a simple example but one of many, especially when you get into the iOS scene. I can see apple love the control they have over iOS and they will be moving OSX in this direction they’ve started with the app store for OSX, I can see an update in the future which will see users being unable to install third party programs from out with the app store.
All companies protect their products and all companies would rather you didn't buy anyone else's product, they all want to maximize their sales, after all they aren't charities they exist to make money for the people that own them. Look at the other big players who've been in court for trying to take over the market or put competition out of business, they all want the biggest slice of the cake.

Why is it wrong to protect your proprietary products and systems?

Theres nothing wrong with trying to protect your innovation, provided you actually innovated to start with. Apple is a patent troll. If the apple of today existed back when apple was just started out, apple wouldn't have made it passed the garage door.
I have no problem with you, or anyone else, not wanting to do business with Apple, or any other company but you should at least approach things with an open mind. But as Professor Richard Dawkins said "Not so open that you brain falls out."

I've an open mind and can make my own decisions. I don't like the way apple do business, they need to watch out because their anti-competitive practices are painting them the bad guy of the tech industry.
ebooks are a difficult issue and one I don't pretend to understand but what I do find hard to understand is how Amazon can charge more for some of their ebooks than they do for the paper version.

Until recently, when apple and some publishers they were colluding with were sued by the US gov, the reason amazon was charging so much was because of apple.
Apple might be centre stage in this fight at the moment but I think it's really the publishers that are running scared, after all if ebooks take off in a really big way and paper books go into decline publishers will go out of business, authors will still write and the world will still get their books but in a different form. Some authors might make a lot of money but their publisher makes far more.

Publishers are frightened that books with go the same way as music, a book can only be in one persons hands at any one time and is difficult to make a decent copy. An ebook can be copied and passed around the world via the Internet in moments.

Take any 1000 people with and MP3 player, I wonder what percentage of the music would be illegal downloads.

Take any 1000 people reading a book, I wonder what percentage would be illegal photocopies.

The publishers current business model is falling apart, just like the music industries is/was. While the music industry went after pirates the publishers colluded with apple to keep book prices high, forcing amazon to do the same. The day after apple and the publishers were sued, amazon reduced its prices.

Do yourself a favour...dont buy a MAC. They are just over priced fashion statements.

I wouldn't buy an i-pad, as I think they are rather silly and people tend to end up supplementing these must have 'stand alone' devices with keyboards, mice and stands. Similarly, I wouldn't have an iphone. I do, however, love mac computers. The last one ran for years with no problems. It was only replaced because it was so out-spec'd. We now have a current model i-mac. Although this looks great, it was not bought as a fashion statement as it is kept in a study and basically no-one but me and my husband ever see it. In my opinion, if you want a desk top you can't get better. It is much more user friendly than a windows based pc. There are no ugly boxes and no ugly wires (wireless mouse and keyboard). We have Windows for Mac if we need to use Excel, powerpoint or whatever. If you keep your computer in a living area, I would definitely get an i-mac, every other desk top is ugly. I should say we also have a windows based netbook, though I never use this.

John Lewis are a good choice for whatever you decide to buy. They are quite happy to demonstrate and, in my experience, are usually frank about the pros and cons of what they sell. They also offer two year warranties as standard.

OK back on topic..printers,if you dont need colour id thoroughly recommend the HP laserjet p 1102w which can be had for around £70. What a bargain..!

    I have recently bought one.

My previous printer was a hp inkjet..great printer but the replacement ink carts (genuine hp) where almost the cost of a new printer as inkjets have now become so cheap to buy !

I appreciate the whole pc/apple/linux debate is a can of worms so each to their own..i just didnt want to op to pay out a lot of money without a good view of what is available.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Fair point.

There's no point in taking the discussion any further anyway as we'll never agree.
