QUOTE]
Chaps on the radio said that tgere were "lots" of properties avialble on Letting agents sites and that £21000 pa cap was more than enough.
The mayor of Newham has made the point that 1.) almost all letteng agents will not accept HB tennants 2.) that the HB can only be paid to units under the 33% of average rent barrier reducing choice further.
Apparently they wrote to 1200 social housing bodies to establish if they had any capacity.
The mayor also said that they were being hit by people being "shifted" from West London boroughs, illustrating one (borough) who provided grants of £2000 for them to move.
The mayor said it was areal problem that would irrespective of the result of the local election and also quoted Boris Johnson saying that this policy would result in "social cleansing" at the time it was introduced.
I am sure that HB is paid to some degree to many residents who work, undertaking some of the worst jobs, at the minimum wage or less, keeping the Capital going.
Stoke has it's own problems and moving these people of the Governments doorstep (out of site, out of mind) doesn't solve the problem. Unfortunately social infrastructure to accommodate all these additional families lags decades behind need
How long before "council housing" appears again as the only affordable long term route?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

The use of the term 'social cleansing' by the BBC is pretty reprehensible IMO.
According too the Mayor of Newham these was a phrase coined by Boris Johnson at the time the policy was brought in by the Government."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I think the timing (just before the elections) has a lot to do with this.
Having said that, I've heard of a similar thing happening in Devon where a council (can't remember whether it was Manchester or Birmingham) is buying up properties to ship their tenants down to.
I have no idea if there's any truth in the rumour but it's doing the rounds.0 -

The actual phrase is 'Kosovo-style social cleansing'. IMHO that belittles what those poor bggers went through.0 -

I agree with you on the comparison to Kosovo but it was BJ not BBC that used the phrase, at 1.51 in the link you provided.
Interestingly BJ also said that he would work to ensure that sufficient monies were available to subsidise those who genuinely couldn't afford not to live where they do, work, schooling etc."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

And how on earth does Boris intend to make this scheme operate fairly? Everybody thinks they're a special case."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
So what exactly is the problem here? Is it the money, or is it the new capping rules preventing councils from paying the levels of benefit they've previously been allowed to pay?

Supply and demand.
Too many people not enough accommodation.
I didn't realise there was a "special situations fund" but as there is then it makes a bit of a mockery of the cap. I guess it should allow them (councils) to be more selective and pursue a cost down option where applicable which they should have been (are? ) doing anyway."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Not so sure the normal rules of supply and demand come into it once you make something free?0 -
We have lately had a wave of new East European immigrants approaching the letting agency within my business all claiming HB. Not sure why this is. We are in the South East in the shires.
I'm just about sick and tired of all this entitlment and lifestyle welfare. Time for us workers to rebell perhaps?
Welfare was supposed to be a last resort safety net, not this lifestyle monster that grows and grows.
Imagine if all us workers actively went out of our way to do what all the welfare lifestylers do, ergo, to not play our part, contribute as little as we can.
Austerity is a myth.0
