Broadband and moving houses

Hi All,
SInce I am on the verge of moving house,I am wondering whether I should be taking out a broadband connection with a contract of a year.
Does anyone know whether I would be able to continue an existing broadband connection once I move houses.
Phoned Aol and Virgin, but no one seems to be sure.
All the short term broadband packages have a penalty attached for early cancellation hence the reason for looking at a longer term package..
I have freeview at home which Im happy with ,dont really need Sky or more channels unless there isnt much of a difference in prices with free broadband and if they allow me to continue on their existing broadband package on moving house
Thanks for replying.

When I last moved, I was able to transfer my AOL account fairly easily with a few emails. It took about a fortnight to go through.
There should be details at AOL Keyword: House Move.
With my next imminent move, I want to quit AOL, but I've been putting this one off, as I imagine it's going to be less straightforward...0 -
... totally the opposite... switching broadband providers is much easier! All you need to do is ring up AOL for your MAC, give the MAC to your new provider, and the change will happen 7-10 days later - downtime will be in the region of 5/10 minutes0

mrj, it's a silly question, but i want to get this straight in my head.
i'm coinciding my move with cancelling AOL- so as i leave this house, i leave AOL, and new house= new ISP (and new phone number).
do i need the MAC? if i don't get one and pass it on to the next occupant of my current phone number, will they have problems should they want broadband?0 -
You need to make sure your AOL account is closed at your current address. (So you don't keep getting billed by them)
Don't request a MAC from them, as AOL won't terminate your account just because you ask for a MAC.
You need to request termination and get a termination reference number from them.
The MAC is no use as you will need a new connection at your new house (a MAC is used to migrate between ISPs on the same ADSL connection).
Once terminated the new owner "should" be able to set up broadband if wanted in the future no problem.0 -
mark - sorry, i did not know that you were moving again - wasn't in you OP
if you were moving, then it could be possible that AOL extend your contract by 12 months - i'd check with them first... but i am unsure if you can do a house move to a new number
anyhow, if there is no 12 month extension, and it is possible - it maybe easier to do that (though I do not know exactly when the connection would give live - ie. same day?) - if it is less than 7 days possibly do that and use MAC... if its more - might as well order a brand new connection from elsewhere0 -

This is a little confusing,
You cannot use a MAC in this way (to transfer a broadband connection from one location to another)
A MAC is intended to allow you to change from one ISP to another on an existing connection.0
