Now combine those incidents of disability discrimination with a few choice racist words and you'll know what the Asian disabled person has to go through. At least you are fortunate enough that once your disability becomes apparent the abusers are shamed into going away. If you're Asian the abuse continues only now they switch over to racist stereotype and abuse to justify what they just said and have last word. For example when they realise they have just made a fool of themselves when they see the wheelchair/walking stick etc, they then proceed to say that you should not have been allowed in the country in the first place as you are obviously of no use and just a burden to society. Others will comment that you should show some gratitude as you would not get these rights back home.
I think it's sad that so many English people feel the need to behave in this disgusting manner. Is this what the Asian wanting to integrate into British society is meant to aspire to in terms of personal behaviour and manners? As for the elderly making these remarks, what kind of example are they setting for the youth of today, who they are constantly berrating for lack of respect and consideration for others?0 -
Very good post. Do you mind if I re-post it on Tumblr to try and spread awareness a little?0

This thread just goes to show how many bigots are out there in the world!
Not only do I have HRM and a blue badge - I have to use a walking stick as I have a rare illness that has certain effects like nerves not communicating with muscles and I can and have suddenly fallen over - but because I am also overweight, it is assumed that all my troubles are to do with that and that I do not deserve DLA and BB. 999 has to be called to help me up as I cannot flex my ankles or knees or toe joints easily. Bet the 60+ brigade would not help me up then eh? This began Feb last year and I got diagnosis in Oct 11. Called Myasthenia Gravis - incurable and can be fatal(rare). However, it is not just the illness it is all the medications that I take and these also cause more side effects, like I need to be within feet of a loo most of the day. Hence I rarely go out, unless I plan carefully. So far no one has actually come upto me and had a go, but I have had the looks. I find walking more than 6-8 feet in one go hard as my legs wobble and go weak, my breath gets shallow and it is worse at end of day normally as this illness is one if you do stuff then you get very weak by end of day and so cannot do anything like climbing stairs to bed. Often sleep on sofa for 2 hours to restore a bit before going up. But to look at me, you 'd be hard pressed to see anything but an overweight person, using a stick. I would not wish this on anyone, but I have it and so have to adapt my life to suit the illness.0 -
I hate to say this, because there's probably a good reason why you don't, but if you're at risk of falling, unable to get up, and can only manage short distances, have you thought about getting a wheelchair?
They're not just for paraplegics, and based on that post I think you may find using one surprisingly liberating, even if you leave it at home on good days and only use it on the bad days.
I know what you mean about the medication. I'm not disabled but the problems I do have, well they aren't as bad as the side effects of the methotrexate I was on to deal with them, so I've had to stop taking it.0 -
I have an old banger, its multi coloured too:rotfl:, but so what if the disabled have swanky cars (i know some who do drive lovely cars), i bet all of us who are disabled would gladly swap places with the able bodied in a heartbeat if it meant we could live a normal day working and walking from where ever the car has been parked and not in a bb bay. What i'd give to have a normal life, you would'nt know.Am not a total newbie, I lost my previous log in details after taking a very long break from this site :embarasse0

I would......I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...0 -
I have a fairly new car, but use the badge only when taking my mum somewhere who is pretty crippled with osteoarthritis, perhaps it should be kept in mind that it could well be a carer or family member supporting the person with a blue badge to access something, not that the car is paid for by the state. Yet I frequently get flithy looks from people, often people much older, and similiar experiences to those listed above.0

can you not give it a rest, you spit out endless bile with no real rhyme or reason, it's just comes across as personal with you, have you thought about appealing your family members benefit, get cab involved, would that stop the tirade of insults
Obvious one is they don't make those little grey/green dinky cars anymore
I could no longer drive my manual car and so given a lifesaver of motability i was able to have an automatic, oh no it was a brand new car. And guess what, i'm going to give it back this year and get another brand new swanky new one, you know the reason for new ones are perhaps less likely to break down and leave someone with mobility needs stranded, but it helps me keep some part of independence, do you mind?
Everyone hates a benefits claimant until their husband leaves them, or they end up needing to have support with their health and can't manage to work..
I'm on benefits and was claiming as a lone parent until I slipped 3 disks in different places..
I won't ever be able to work again and I will eventually submit a DLA claim, I haven't yet as I need support to fill the form..
So hopefully I will be able to swap my 8 year old KA which kills my back for something more suitable..
Fair play to anyone who has a mobility car, I wouldn't wish my Arthritic pain on anyone...
Ironically today I was driving into a normal parking space, next to it was a old lady who thought it was ok to put her bag in the space, her car was parked in the next one..
She mouths off a tirade of abuse telling me I could park anywhere else..
I got out and called her ignorant, after all my baby getting out of my car is more important than her putting her bag in my space..
Some people need to be more thoughtful..I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...0 -

This is a very important point. The cabs of recovery trucks aren't exactly known for being accessible to anyone with a physical impairment.
I suspect that, were it not for the existence of Lum's breakdown service, my partner would have to give up her 18yr old car and get a modern box of bland on motability. As it is, even if it needs to go home on a flatbed I'll still be driving out there to pick her up.0
