I suggest that the OP is using XP?

In which case just right click anywhere on the desktop then on the pop-up panel click on properties, then on the screen saver tab.

On the wait box you can change it to whatever you want from none to 30 mins etc

Yes it is XP, thank you! I have done that now and set it too none so I shall see if that stops it.

Thanks to both posters for your help :)
  • Didn't work - It's still doing it......Any more ideas?!

Beginning to sound like a graphics card problem. Back to basics - check the cable between monitor and computer base is securely attached at both ends.

Does the screen come back on immediately you click the mouse/key or do you have to try several times?

    Did you click "apply"?

Try doing it twice, on the second attempt you will see if it was actually changed - otherwise set it to a reasonable number say 15 mins or as you wish.........
  • I have checked all cables and they all appear fine and securely attached.

Sometimes the screen comes back but itself and sometimes I have to move the mouse a little bit and sometimes a lot. They doesn't seem to be a pattern.

I did click 'apply' and it did definitely remove the screen saver.

I still suspect the graphics card, possibly overheating.

Suggest you take the side/cover off the PC base (after disconnecting power) and clear out all the dust/fluff you can see. The thin nozzle of a vacuum cleaner and a smallish paintbrush is ideal for this. Some recommend using a compressed air to blow the dust out but I just find it just blows the crap everywhere and mkes more mess than you started with.

While you're in there, have a look to see if the graphics card has it's own fan and try spinning it with your finger to check it turns freely. To find the graphics card, follow the lead from the monitor (I'm assuming the PC has an add-on graphics card rather than built into the mother board.

Before replacing the covers, reattach power, turn on and check all fans are working. You could also run the PC without the cover for a day or so to see if the problem persists.
