Difference between a cot mattress and a mattress for older child?

yes there is strong evidence that 2nd hand mattresses are linked with cot death. you should always buy a new mattress even between siblings hth

However remember that there are other factors in cot death, not just mattresses. I have bought one new mattress for dd2, dd1s mattress was her aunts (she is 6). Dd2 had a new on for the cot however i bought a cot bed from a friend with a matress and am using that mattress.

As I said, there are other factors in cot death that are worse then not buying a mattress.

A cot (and therefore a cot mattress) is smaller than a cot bed. If you have been given a cot bed then the mattress that comes with it will be suitable when it's used as a cot for your baby and when its used as a bed for your toddler. However I would strongly suggest you buy a brand new mattress (cot/bed size!) to use. It's not worth the risk using a 2nd hand mattress and the one you buy you can use all through the cot and bed stage. Once your child is wanting a single bed you will then buy a bigger single bed mattress for that but you'll get a good few years out of a cot-bed so its a good purchase. My advice would be buy the best you can afford as your little one will be sleeping on it for a while.
