Difference between a cot mattress and a mattress for older child?

Hi all,
We have bought a 2nd hand cot/bed which came with a brand new bed mattress but having not had the baby yet, will obviously need a cot mattress before baby graduates to the bed mattress! 2 questions:

1. Whats the difference between a cot mattress and a bed mattress when the size will be identical??

2. Where can we get a cheap but SAFE and GOOD QUALITY baby cot mattress?

Many thanks in advance

Morty

Thats what I thought but the bed mattress doesn't have any springs in it...it's thick foam.

It's been a few years but as far as I can remember we used the same mattress for the cot and the bed until my DS was about 3 when we bought a regular sized single bed.

We bought ours from Babies R Us as I wanted to see exactly what we were getting and compare the spec. I suffer from allergies, and as it happened my DS had asthma and now allergies himself, so I was grateful we bought the type to protect against allergies.

Perhaps you could go into a shop to see what you like/need/prefer than shop around online for a deal on that type.

It seems like mattresses for babies are as confusing and varying as for adults - samples here

My 3 year old is still using the same mattress that we bought for her cot bed when she was a baby. It's a Mamas and Papas mattress and has springs in it.

have worked out how to delete the extra posts now :D

Mattress not covered in plastic, Appears to have a breathable zip off cover on it.

I'm wondering if the person we bought it off has made a mistake.

I'm also wondering if it is brand new, although it does look it. Are there dangers associated with using an almost new mattress with a baby?

LOL, didn't think you rude at all!

Taking mattress into Mothercare is such a good idea, thank you. Pregnancy brain seems to have removed all ability to think logically. I'll do that next weekend.

    Cheers

    Hi Morty,

Firstly, congratulations! I bought a second hand cotbed for my son and I got a new mattress from Mothercare for it - personally, I wouldn't want to use a second hand mattress.

They are a standard size for cotbeds. I'll be using the same mattress when we convert it into a bed as it wil still be the same size.

    Hope this helps

We had a cotbed for our daughter and mattress (sprung). She has been in it since birth and is now in the bed, with the same mattress.

Only trouble is baby no.2 due in a week, so we have had to buy a second hand cot. But purchased new mattress.

Even if the mattress is new, i would be worried it has been sat for a long time without being covered up. I would go and get a new mattress, which doesn't have to be expensive. Just check the size you need as sometimes they can be unusual sizes.

I think its a good idea to spend money on a good mattress, especially if it is a cotbed. They will be in it for a while.

    Good luck with it all.
