Best customer service?

Can anyone recommend a bank that gives good customer service. I also want one that has UK-only call centres.
I have spent years as an Abbey customer and I am sick of speaking to people that are very polite but cant understand me and that I cant understand. Everytime I ask any kind of query about my account I get given good answers and assured that information will be sent to me, then receive something completely different to what I asked for, having to then spend even more time onthe phone trying to sort the problems out. I think it is unbelievable that they think they can mess with people's money like this!
I think the only way to make my point is to take my business elsewhere asap.
I would ideally like a bank that has telephone banking (UK based) as well as branches that I could visit if need-be. Also, is there anyway of finding out which banks have UK-only call centres.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I know there has been alot of criticism of First Direct and possible charges but in my experience their customer service is second to none. I have my modest part time salary paid into my savings account, transferring over most of it each month to my current account and therefore do not pay any charges.

Do try them, whatever time of day or night you ring there is someone to answer your calls, they are cheerful, polite and helpful, I cannot fault them.

Try Nat West good customer service and can contact branch direct
Remember only people who say money doesn't matter have already got enough
  • I too would recommend Lloyds, having changed to them from Abbey (who I thought were utterly hopeless & lost a lot of my personal information 'in the post'). Lloyds have been brilliant, and the staff in the branch are lovely too, even to the extent of remembering my name when I pop in (which isn't on a daily basis!!). And I was told at the time of opening my account they were probably closing their Indian call centre, so this has proved to be the case.

also they never shipped their call centres abroad - always kept in UK

Nationwide are great for me. Good customer service, plenty of branches, LINK cash machines and great online facilities. I would happily recommend.

I was with HSBC who had overseas call centres and I agree they never fully understand and you're never quite sure if you are getting the right info out of them. I changed to Natwest whoose customer service I found excellent and also they will put you throught to your local branch if required. Also Yorkshire Bank I think are UK based (Scotland I think as they are part of Clydesdale) and I have also found their customer service excellent. Both have easy to use online access as well.
Remember ....its not a bargain unless you need it :D

I have been with First Direct for the past 12 years and cant recall a single instance that I could grumble about in all that time. Their service has been impeccable and their call centre staff all sound local, although I seldom call anymore and use the internet access so that I dont pay at all for calling them.
