Calling USA mobile from UK mobile in USA

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but here goes!
I'm going to NYC on Tuesday and taking my mobile; I'll need to call/text someone once I'm there that has a USA mobile. Now, how do I do it? There number starts with 347, do I have to put the USA international dialling code or, because I'm in the USA won't I need it?
I'm not bothering with a USA sim as I'm only there a week and will probably use my phone once or twice.

AFAIK, dialing a number as an international one starting with '+' always works in any country.
Phoning US mobile in the US, from a UK mobile.
However, make sure that roaming is enabled for your sim and that your handset works in USA. AFAIK it has to be tri- or quad-band.
