Charged for unused Gas Meter

EDF have started charging me for a Gas meter in my property. I have no gas appliances and the meter has been turned off for 2 1/2 years. I am looking for a utility company to switch dual fuel but will not charge for the unused gas meter. Any help much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

You need to find one with "no standing charge"

Why would you need Dual fuel when you do not use gas? Dual fuel is not always cheaper

Simply enter '0' into a switching site for your gas use.
For example, I'm not using gas at the moment, and npower offers a 50 quid discount for the gas part of dual fuel if you pay by DD.

ask them to remove the meter
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

What do you mean by switched off? If its capped/clamped I wouldn't expect a standing charge as its not in use until changed. If you don't need it, why not get rid of it as Chanz says.

  • If its not your property I dont think you can just ask to have the meter removed as theres a charge for having the meter reinstated, the "no standing charge " option is the best way I would have thought.Brit Gas have that option, any comp site will give you all the others.

Sasquacco is correct, you're looking for a "no standing charge" tariff.

If your situation is likely to continue for a while, though, pleae be aware that in Ofgem's ongoing retail market review, the number of standing charge tariffs looks likely to increase in the future (assuming these go ahead!):

    and look in section 2.11

So going forward, you may find it harder to escape paying a charge.

Your gas supplier still has to pay what is called transportation charges to the owners of the pipes that go to your property and maintain a contract with a metering company for the meter and a post emergency metering contract in many cases, that money is all as you have a meter attached to the pipe in your property.

That money has to come from somewhere and logically as the meter in in your property and for your property it would be from you.

I am supprised that after this period you have not had a letter sent from the transportation company asking if you still use gas as they would want to turn off in street for safety reasons. Not to mention the supplier not wanting to pay out for something they are not getting paid for,

You can request a gas meter be removed, it saves on the suppliers meter rental from the mam.

Does it save on the rental?

The reason I ask is that you can have your elec meter removed but the supplier gets charged for record maintenance by the MOP and DC because they are still appointed.

In elec, the cost is not passed to the customer in these cases as the account sits unmetered but the supplier still pays the record maintenance charge.
