  • All I know is that my three, with two at uni, are bleeding me dry!

I don't know how parents on low, or even medium, incomes manage.

ah but a car will never earn money and contribute to the economy to pay for your penson...

Great reason to have kids - but you forgot that they'll be able to look after you when you're old

The revenue I pay out on petrol (not to mention the payments I make directly to it) will pay my pension.

A child should cost what you can afford them to cost. As i read in another post it's sometimes what you DON'T give them that counts. Anyone can throw money at a child but they would much prefer your time. I see so many children get all they think their heart desires and they are spoilt brats. Nothing wrong with treats etc but if you are spending on them to compensate for lack of quality time then i think it is wrong.

This is just my opinion and i don't wish to offend anyone.

it's not a reason to have kids just a statement of fact - we need children who will then grow up to earn money and contribute to the economy for our economy to run and however much we pay in tax through petrol or otherwise isn't enough to pay our pensions unless the economy is strong.

And I doubt very much that any children will be able to afford to look after me in my old age.

I do not know if many people saw the money programme yesterday. It was saying to bring a child up costs £100, 000 on average until your child is 21.

They dont say how much it costs once they are 21!!

Just as you think thats it ......... then comes the grandchildren!! :D

I agree with you to a point.

And I meant that they'll be there to look after you, not that they'll be paying for you!

£2k just on furnishing a nursery!? I was lucky enough to qualify for the £500 sure start grant when I had my son. It was more than enough as the only thing new I bought was a couple of packs of vests and sleepsuits (not Dior either- boots I think!)

I think they should have run a second calculator next to the first- how little you could spend if you put your mind to it.
  • 5 kids. What else could i have done with half a million?

    HOW MUCH

We spent £50 on a second hand cotbed, £60 on a new mattress and a few quid on bedding. We already had the other furniture that's now in his room. We also aquired a wardrobe off freecycle so I could have mine back :p

Who came up with that daft figure??
