The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • When I am in new York I always round the fare up to the next dollar then add two. I read that was the norm in a travel book - and in the city I took a lot of fairly short taxi rides.

If it is a short journey and the fare is only around the $5 mark I give them $10.
