No problem with Avira here, it's just that no replacement for Norton was mentioned.
(p.s. you did remember to run the Norton removal tool didn't you?)

Possibly. The removal tool gets rid of ALL traces of the program. If not used, odd bits are left lurking around your PC which might interfere with the operation of a replacement product.

Mmm... I can't even remember what it was I uninstalled.
Might it be worth running Norton Power eraser?

You don't need to know. All of those links are to show you how to find/record your Norton Product Key in case you wish to reinstall it.
