Not just the DWP. Also the council and HMRC!
Yes they do have access to bank accounts but if I remember rightly, they only check up if they suspect something dodgy going on. It must be too time consuming to go through every claimants bank details.

    They're in prison? :)

I am currently "between jobs" and have more than the £6K limit in savings, so I am not eligible for any benefits. My NI contributions are for others, who are less well off than I.

I was told by the DWP, in no uncertain terms, that I still wouldn't get anything, if and when my savings ever dropped to below £6K. Even using it to live is clearly regarded as "deprivation of capital".

However, I'm confident that things will return to normal long before it comes to this.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

If this is a genuine thread the op is a total fool! LOL

All you need to do is open an account with any online bookie, upload all the money into there,
and THEN apply for benefits! :)

You seem to have an incredibly dimwitted mind thinking that the paperwork filling staff at the council are mind-reading pyschics who will magically know all your details and the locations of all your money! :D

All you needed to do was stick it in a bookie account,
make your claim for benefits and send them a bank statement of what your bank balance now was (a few hundred quid),
and then once your claim has been accepted, completed, and filed away,
you jjust withdraw your money from the bookie account back into your bank account.

Yes, I'm sure the dwp wouldn't view a large transfer to a bookie the day before claiming benefits as somewhat fishy. Better not show them that part of the statement eh?

I do hope you get caught. It pains me thinking I have to pay for people like you to eat.

They can think whatever they want to, as their views are irrelevant! :D

They cannot refuse to pay you what your legally entitled to just because they think it looks abit ''fishy''... :rotfl:

Unless they can provide solid evidence that proves beyond all reasonable doubt that you have spent your own money soley for the purpose of claiming more benefits money,
    then they are powerless. :o

You would be extremely foolish to only have 1 bank account though anyways.

Its extremely more sensible and logical to have 2-3 bank accounts,
1 which is for benefits income and other income which you have no problem in showing a statement of to the council,
and a 2nd which is your private account.

That's wrong. The limit is £16k not £6k!

The above makes it clear that the OP had in excess of £6k as the DWP were making deduction to her benefits. The above post also makes it clear that because the DWP were making the deduction she decided to pay some 'debts' to friends and family. This is clear and intentional deprivation. The DWP will act accordingly.

I only borrowed the money in dribs and drabs, I always said I have the money to pay you back if and when you need it.. sorry for not answering earlier.. Nicky..

    To clarify....

How much did you have in savings?
How much have you paid to people?
Have you bought anything else (other than normal living expenses)?
