Very good question ' How did they know that you had savings ' and still not answered
  • Is this a wind up ? Is it a troll ? Is the OP an idiot ? Or does the OP think the DWP are idiots ?

If said savings are n a bank, then they would know without being told.

If said savings were under mattress, then he will have declared it.

Either way I am not sure what is happening here since £6000 is allowed before it affects benefits.

If the original poster had submitted 1,000 prior posts I would have assumed that the tale was made up nonsense.

As it's a first one then I'll happily bet a kidney versus someone who'll risk a tenner that it's total !!!!!!!!.

Anubis im with you but it doesnt stack up tbh and there is some bits missing IF they borrowed the money knowing they needed to repay it why on gods earth did they decide to save up in a bank to such an amount that it showed up over the radar for benifit claims. If its under the matress why on gods earth was it declared . I personally think this is a wind up or the op needs more help than just a finacial question answered. Nicky i know its your first post & welcome to MSE but your anonymous here return and lay your cards out. Then there are people to help and others to judge you have to take both but you will get practical advice to.

I told them I had savings..
I was not trying to be dishonest, I had borrowed money from a friend and my Mum thinking I would get work and be able to pay them back without having to take money from my I.s.a.. My friend is moving back home and my Mum wanted money for a new kitchen, it sounds a bit of a weak story I know.. still worried.

You saved for an emergency, being unemployed and needing to claim benefits is a pretty good emergency to me.

Sweetheart, you should be worried. Customer of mine spent his savings on a holiday, money to friends and family, repayment of family debt...he was penalised under the deprivation rule and is being treated like he still has the money. The DWP have slashed his benefit and he is living on a pittance. Worse, this is ongoing for YEARS as the amount he should have to live on decreases by a little each year.

So, to repeat a question asked earlier...were the loans to you (and back to the 'lenders') via BACS or cash? Can you prove the transactions?

The Welfare State doesn't recognise any such concept. The only thing you're allowed to do about emergencies is pray they don't happen.

You can have £6,000 of savings and still claim benefits. That's enough to cover quite a lot of emergencies.

You didn't really have savings, you had loans that you hadn't spent yet.
