Just call the provider 30 days before the min term ends and ask to switch the contract to PAYG.

If you want to use it on a different network you have to give a notice of cancellation instead and to get the phone unlocked if it is locked to the network.

If you want to port the number to a new network you have to request a PAC instead of giving a notice and to use it to port the number within 30 days.

It is possibly simpler to switch to PAYG first, then to make you mind about other networks and porting.

Disagree - the contract must be ended and without any ambiguity. The mechanism the network uses (admin only, or replacement SIM) is of no consequence. If the handset is locked, then a same network SIM will work fine - but be prepared for the network to do everything to retain the contract liability, from free calls to a new handset. Resist this at all counts. To be ultra sure, if outwith the minimum term - confirm cancellation in writing also.

    Disagree with what?
Requesting switching to PAYG 30 days in advance?
    Giving a cancellation notice?
    Requesting and using a PAC?

In writing - maybe, if switching to PAYG or cancelling. No point in wasting money and efforts if you port the number out.

Unnecessary. When the minimum term has ended (or is just about to end) contact your provider and ask for a transfer to PAYG. When you receive the PAYG SIM, simply follow the very straightforward activation and transfer instructions and all will be well.
If you cancel the contract and something goes wrong, you could lose the number. This way prevents that.
If you stay with the same network the SIM will work fine in the current mobile, if you move networks the mobile may need unlocking.

Grumbler - the disagreement is with 'calling' the provider and saying you wish to switch to PAYG. This is a needless complication and adds confusion to the termination, have you forgotten about all those who were sent replacement SIMS but because they unlocked and went elsewhere, the fact the SIM wasn't activated meant the contract continued.

Vuvuzela - for the reasons already mentioned, it is far from 'Unnecessary', but a safety net, as you need to ensure your liabilities end, not on a whim of the network, but under your explicit control. The priority is to ensure termination. Nothing else should get it the way, as it is your money and the ongoing DD that you need to take care of is not abused, that - and your hard won credit file.

If something can go wrong, it will. Keep it simple, and take extreme care as nothing should be left to chance.

I've sometimes terminate on the last day (having giving MORE THAN 30 days' notice) AND requested the sim be made a PAYT. This has always been on Vodafone - not exactly a competent or customer-friendly network - but the EXISTING sim immediately converts to a PAYT on the final day and there is no replacement sim.
