Went to buy a TV for Aged Parents yesterday, Tesco Extra, huge shop but no-one to help, three staff playing, yes playing, in Tesco Phone Shop alongside the TVs wouldn't help although they had no customers!
Eventually a young lady left her till to try to help but everyone from that section had left at 6pm!
So why aren't the prices on the shelf right for the TVs above them? Plus why does the TV say get a vesa 75x75 bracket and the smallest bracket availabls says vesa 100x100??? Managed to open the box and it has holes closer together that fitted but no info to this on the box!

Tesco sell TVs and suchlike as a convenience. I'd never personaly expect the staff there to be knowledgable or helpful. It's just self service, and priced accordingly.
If you want advice, you're better off going to a specialist.0 -
Squiddy But the Tesco Phone Shop is just a part of the Tesco store and all the staff are in the same Tesco dress as the other staff. So is it a separate shop?
If you go to Debenhams which has lots of shops they come to help if I am in another shop from theirs.
These staff were too busy playing around and told me they couldn't help.
vyle there is no choice down here for a cheap TV, this Tesco was 30 miles away! Good TV shop well I suppose there is one in Plymouth, another 12 miles.0 -
There was a management idiot from Tesco on the radio the other day. He said he was increasing the number of 'colleagues' on the shop floor to enhance the shopping experience. Yep I've seen evidence of that in my local store only yesterday.
BUT did it enhance my experience? No because if you put a lot of Tesco employees on the shop floor they work VERY slowly and chat to each other! Bad move management dude.... bad move!0 -
That will teach you for attempting to buy a television from a scummy supermarket.0

I'm sure there is a post on the forum somewhere regarding the life expectancy of certain brand of tv's from Tesco, depending on what brand your thinking of purchasing OP it may pay you to have a search.0

If you don't have anywhere nearby, brush up on some reviews online John Lewis. Nationwide delivery and if it goes wrong, they'll pick up.
If you do, though, ring one of the slightly more local branches (like Exeter) rather than using the website, because my personal experience of the website customer service vs the in-store service/over the phone hasn't been great.0 -
Id rather spendmy money at john lewis orricher sounds, tesco dont deserve my money.0

Sounds like lazy staff. According to the OH, the Tesco Phone Shop Staff are just regular staff who have been trained on phones - Tesco will even send untrained staff there if there's no-one else around. There's no reason that they can't help you with TVs, although they may not know very much about them.
Also mirrors the experience I normally get of the phone shop in our local Tesco Extra.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
If you were out shopping in BHS and there were no staff around to help, would you expect the staff of Topshop to come along and serve you if they weren't busy?
I worked in a supermarket years ago when I was at college on the frozen food department. People would ask me about other items in the store and at no point did I ever just say that I couldn't help. Even though I was only 17/18, I thought about how I would feel if I was the customer and was just told by someone representing the company that they weren't willing to do anything to help me. I would always do my best to find someone within the relevant department - if there was no one available, I would find a manager that could assist them (or put a call out). Obviously I would inform the customer of what I was doing for them and they could make a decision as to whether they wanted to wait for me to find a manager (which may not always be easy; however at least they could make a choice).
Nowadays I find myself surprised if someone in a shop (that is part of a large chain) goes out of their way to help me. Look at the responses on this thread, people are almost surprised that the OP even asked someone who worked in the Tesco mobile section for help.
Considering this country seems to be moving more towards the service sector and away from manufacturing (due to the costs), my opinion is that we're perhaps not doing a very good job at providing a decent level of service.
Maybe I'm just getting old (I'm now 38).
Edit: This article on the BBC website summarizes some of Tesco's recent failings.
One of those is: "The critics have noted that Tesco's staff per 1,000 sq ft of selling space had fallen from 6.3 six years ago to 4.8, putting it behind its main rivals."

People reap what they sow.
Specialised TV, Game, Book etc. shops are all going out of business because they can't afford to compete with the big supermarket prices.
However the staff in supermarkets are nowhere near as knowledgeable about their products, which is why you get situations like this. With either no shop assistants or ones that know nothin.
You buy a TV from Tesco because its cheap, if you want to buy a TV from a shop where the staff knows what they are talking about then you should visit a different store.
In the next 10 years pretty much everything you want to buy will be bought from a supermarket. However you will have to do your own research into what you buy! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
