Using mobile in USA on holiday

I am really hard of hearing and hardly ever use my mobile 'phone apart from occasional texts. It is a Nokia 2630 and I have Orange PAYG - a £10 top us lasts for ages.
I'm planning a holiday in USA and I would like to take my mobile in case of emergency. If any one knows how I go about doing this (any arrangements to make in advance etc.) I'll be very grateful.
Also - although I don't know how they got my mobile number - I receive occasional calls and quite a few texts from marketing or advertising people. I just delete the texts but don't know how to stop them. If they contacted me when I'm on holiday in USA would I have to pay for their in coming texts or calls.?
Because of my hearing problem on the few occasions when I use my mobile it is mainly for texts. If it is a call I have to be in a very quiet place and even then I really struggle to hear the call.
Any information or advice will be very much appreciated. I'm looking forward to my holiday but I'm not a seasoned traveller.
Many thanks

Apparently, all Orange PAYG sims are enabled for using abroad, but it's worth making sure.
For the costs see http://www.orange.co.uk/roaming/usa/
Incoming texts are always free, but incoming calls are 70p/min.
ETA: not all handsets work in USA and I think your Nokia will not:

I guess buying a basic PAYG handset with a local sim in USA will be cheaper than buying a tri-band or a quad-band handset here in UK (£40+ AFAIK).
ETA2: Nokia C1-01 is £25+£10 at CPW on Virgin. It's likely to be unlocked (£30+£10 on Orange).0 -
Thank you very much, grumbler. If my mobile won't work in USA my problem has been solved - I think I'll go without one. The information you have given has helped and is much appreciated.
Thank you
