They told me we'd be better off getting Freesat since she lives in a poor reception area, so I shall be looking into the price of it today. I do think it's hard on old people, having to shell out all that extra money!
My mother is 80+ too. It's payback time, Sonny.:D
The easiest thing is to sign up for Sky for a year, then cancel.
If you paid for the dish, you still need a FreeSat tuner, either in the TV or a Set Top Box. So you might as well get a Sky deal for a year.0 -
1. Doesn't the help scheme provide one TV with digital TV for free for over 75 year olds? I thought that was the point of it.
2. Sky for a year would be well over £200 much more than a basic freesat system installed, in my experience the freesat epg will be easier for an oap to use as its not cluttered with unsubribscbed channels.0 -
Little point in paying out for either Sky (minimum £240) or Freesat if it is a simple aerial or cabling issue that needs resolving-which is why I suggested asking the neighbours what their reception is like post-switchover.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

A Humax FOXSAT decoder is £99.95 from John Lewis. Maybe £100 to install a dish with shotgun cable. If you catch a good SKY promotion, the difference is negligible. You also get a few paid channels. Free broadband for light users (BT line rental).
If you want to record, though, SKY will disable recording capability if you cancel, so it's better to go the independent route.0
