Do some oil companies have lower quality oil?

The reason I ask is in my previous rented home we were going through 500litres in around 4-6 weeks in the winter. It was a small stone cottage, 3 bed, oil heating radiators and water, and also had a Rayburn. I thought this was extreme and assumed there was a problem with the oil store as it showed signs of leaks.
However, we moved to a 3 bed bungalow, better insulation, double glazing etc. The water is electric and have an electric oven, so purely oil heating for radiators. We moved in with a small amount in the tank and this lasted from August until mid December. We then topped up with our old supplier as we have an account with them, and this 500 litres disappeared in 6 weeks. We don't overdo the heating, 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening ) and extra blast when its very cold.
We havent been able to afford to top up since, and were snowed in the other week. :( (thinking of buying oil filled heaters if you have any wisdom on these)
We are considering changing suppliers, and buying when my two neighbours buy to try and save, but this won't be until end of summer now.
Do you think its my supplier supplying dodgy oil?? Is this possible??

You are approaching this from the wrong angle. Its very unlikely to be quality of the oil, more likely to do with the boiler efficiency. Every boiler will give different efficiencies. How many radiators do you have to heat compared to other house? It doesnt appear to be too difference from your normal usage. Although it may be better insulated does this mean you have had it on alot less?

See I would have thought that too, had it not been for the fact there was another suppliers oil in the tank when we moved in, and not much of it at that, but that lasted a LOT longer on similar usage.
Previous house ran a Rayburn (5 hrs a day or so) and heated the water from the oil, (two hours a day, one in morning and one in evening) as well as central heating (5-6 hrs a day). Here its just central heating (2hrs morning and 2 hrs night, average) so assumed we would have the oil lasting longer than 6 wks.
Theres is no way on earth I can afford to pay £350 every 6 wks to heat the house, hence having no heating since Jan when it ran out :(
I was hoping it was the supplier so I can feel confident on the next top up with the supplier my neigbours use.
  • Why don't you try the new supplier and see if there is any difference? There are jackets you can get for oil boilers which can help you save on oil usage. Sometimes it is not always the best idea to put the oil boiler on for such short periods of time. Make sure you turn off any rads in rooms you do not use. Hope you get it sorted :)
