Mobile Number disconnected

I was in hospital for several weeks with 2 life threatening illnesses. During that time i had not paid my o2 bill because i was in no position to pay. All my other bills got paid because they were on direct debit. I told O2 I could pay by this thursday and I got a text on the 12th saying i need to pay the bill within 7 days (meaning by the 19th) but now my number has been disconnected and I am getting emails from people saying that my number can not be recognised.
Is there any way O2 can recover my old number? It is totally unfair that I was told that I have until the 19th and my number was disconnected before that.
Anyone have any idea if this is really allowed and whether they are likely to give me my number back?
TIA

I don't think that they terminated your contract because of just several weeks delay. Contact them, pay the bill and they will reconnect you.0

The number isn't lost. Once you've paid the outstanding bill o2 will reconnect the number.0 -
