you can use both but just the 8 digit account number would be ok on its own

source: adviser who has done over 30 external transfers this year using just account number and no problems.

The boxes have space for 14 digits so appear to be designed for 6 digit sortcode and 8 digit account number. Why risk omitting information which helps to identify your account?
