Given four hours to live...

...and fourteen years old today :j
My little lad isn't so little any more! He was born five weeks prem, fourteen years ago. He had a number of rare birth abnormalities and a few hours after he was born, he was given just four hours to live, unless his surgery was successful. His first operations were carried out at nine hours old, to correct four major abnormalities of the digestive system. He has had further suregry since, the most recent being last September.
There have been some tough times, but some wonderful times as well. My son now has a normal life expectancy for those with Down's syndrome (maybe 65 years). Just reaching 14 has been an achievement when I look back at what he has been through!
I'm so proud of my son and I just wanted to share his birthday with you, as I have found posters on this board very supportive and friendly.

Many happy returns to your son!
My niece was given 12 hours to live when she was born 15 years ago. She was born at 27weeks and is such a fighter.

Well done to your DS for beating the odds! Depite what you say, I have no doubt that your life has been a constant cycle of worry since he was born, so you need to give yourself credit too. Your son is very lucky to have such a lovely mum xValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
