Insects in the house

Today we found the first bee of the year in our house. After calming down the hysterical 12 year old that discovered it in his bedroom I used the 'sugar on a stick' trick to put it outside. And then I got to wondering what other non-chemical solutions there were to get rid of insects...and does anyone have any ideas for keeping them out of the house in the first place?

Dunno, but I've had a fly buzzing around my flat the last couple of days too so I guess the little blighters are starting to wake up

Thought I would ask this question here.:o

I came down to the kitchen in the middle of the night and found loads of slugs in the kitchen, they are attracted to the cat meat! I removed them all but they do come back. I thought about putting salt down but think the cat might eat it which would make him sick so not sure what to do to get rid of them.
Not sure where they are coming from and they only appear in the early hours of the morning!

    HELP  and thanks!

I put eggshells around my plants to keep slugs away so if you could track down where they're coming in you could put down a layer of eggshells to stop them. Do they leave a trail that you could follow?

Had slugs in my old home -yuk
Found they were coming in under the sink. Also found we had a leak and it was soaking wet there. Sorted the leak, dried it out and no more slugs. Oh a libral dosing of salt didnt go amiss either (our cat couldnt get under the sink)

I wouldnt leave the cat meat down overnight untill you get to the bottom of the problem.

As for non chemical solutions to getting shot of insects, I think its rosemary grown in pots on the window cills that helps. Fly papers are good to trap flies - ugly but chemical free which is a must if you have pets.

We leave our patio doors open most of the summer and to stop the influx of flies/wasps etc I have to make sure that every crumb of food is cleared away. Even the dog food is cleared away after feeding. I made the mistake of leaving food down once and going out and came back to flies everywhere :(

I have loads of woodlice in the kitchen in the mornings, I have no idea where they are getting in, do they respond to ant powder as I could squirt that outside the house.

We used to leave little pots of beer pushed into the soil around the plants that slugs liked, particularly hostas, and they all made a bee-line for that instead. Can't remember where I got the tip from now but it worked! :)

on one of the shopping channels you could buy a plug in insect thingy.. it omits earpeicing waves that make the little blighters scamper (only they can hear it).. doesnt kill them just makes them not want to come into your house..this also goes for mice rats etc. ive recently seen something similar in a warehouse shop type thing called EDs but im sure you could buy them fromt he diy stores soon.. .. we cant have them in our house at the moment as we have a hampster and it would also affect him.. like i say it sends them scurrying before they go mental lol

We have those plug in thingies that get rid of/deter everything from rodents to insects. They don't work. We had rats for a time  so bought them out of desperation because nothing else worked. The only way we got rids of Roland was to poison him and the next door neighbours eventually (after 2 years) found where they were getting in and solved that problem. However, I can say that there was no noticeable reduction in the number of flies/spiders etc that came in. Don't waste your money (unless you want to buy mine :D )

I saw that on QVC! They kept saying you had to buy one, as where would the insects go if your neighbours bought one? In your house!

Anyway, does anyone know how to get rid of ants? We have a parrot though and don't want to get rid of him too.

We had our first big field spider last night - one of those ones that runs like it's on speed and has hairier legs than hubby...Time to keep the plugs in now!!

We get a lot of ants too and we have a parrot, maybe it's something that goes hand in hand?
