Silica type cat litters - any opinions?

  • I find tracking of litter is worse when the cat hops quickly out. So I find to reduce tracking, you can use a hooded litter tray with a swing door. Using a larger tray helps too, as you can rake the litter to the back of the tray, so the cat has to travel across the tray where there is no litter before it goes through the door, which it has to do slowly.:)

Just a warning about silica - many cats will not use it, apparently it is due to a smell the silica has, so I would recommend buying a small bag to try initially rather than buying 15L. My cat is one of the ones who will not use it - I wanted it for the same reason as you, tracking, but no luck. I have tried pretty much everything, I did use shredded paper for a bit which did not track and he seemed to like but the smell was deathly after just a few hours!

Here's a link to the silca stuff Home Bargains sell http://www.homebargains.co.uk/products/824-silica-gel-cat-litter.aspx and I put 4 in the basket and it was charging £2.99 for delivery which is cheaper for me than the bus fare into town to go to home bargains.

You may well be able to order other things for this price from their site.

I myself like Lidl's clumping clay cat litter. Just use a nappy bag and scoop the clumps out daily. (It's just a pity that my moggy likes to dig down to Australia when I've just emptied and re-filled the tray and gets it everywhere. As for tracking, sorry can't comment on that due to her digging habit.

I have just started using this and think it's great ,howvever I didn't understand what it was untill today looking it up and I am now a bit worried due to possible health concerns to my cat.
I have got the type that has no dust in it,and my cat doesn't eat it,but am still worried and will be asking my vet if he's heard of any problems ,except people aroung here I would think have very much outside cats that don't use a loo.

Has anyone on here heard of health probs re this type of litter,I'm never sure what to believe and not at times when looking things up??
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • I could get a week - just about - to a bag with 3 cats and just one tray. It's very easy to clean out, too, and they don't track it as much (but it still comes out a bit).

If I'm feeling a bit flush/have a voucher, I actually get the combined litter thingummies from Catsan, as they have the white litter inside a liner with the silica inside. Silly silly silly money, but easily the best for not having that evil fog of stink as soon as you open the front door after a day outdoors.

My cats are diggers - all of them.

They will not use hooded trays, even with the door off they will not use.

How would newspaper be cheaper when I do not buy newspapers at all? And imagine the smell with 4 cats... yukkkkk

And it is tracking/dust all over that I am realy fed up with.... sigh....

One of my cats is a digger/flinger, even with a hooded tray with a door he manages to hoof it out!

I'm using golden grey master and it has 3% silicate in it, good at clumping and disguising smell. It does track a little but not as bad as oko.

  • If you want a litter which has excellent odour control I have used Purr&Simple Pellet Formula from Bern Pet Foods (who distribute Orijen). This is made from nut shells and it's odour control is better than anything else I have tried. It is also recyclable ( you can put it in your compost bin) but take the 'solid' waste out first LOL.

It is expensive but an excellent product. £7.99 for a 3.63kg bag but does last longer than most. Don't use now due to cost.

That is the one I was using before trying the Oko Plus (still got a lot of it now the OKo plus)

I really feel Golden Grey Master is the best litter ever - but it was costing me about 40 per month for my 4 cats.....

Golden Grey Master was clumping way better than Oko Plus and did not track so much...
