Silica type cat litters - any opinions?

Options
I hear those do not track?

OKO is driving me up the wal with tracking/dust etc.

Silica does that too?

Sigh... surely would work out MUCH more expensive though?

Anyone uses this for their cats?

Any recommendations? Links? How long what size bag lasta for how many cats?

Thanks

I haven't tried silica but I use Tesco's own wood pellets and find they don't track half as much as any other litter I've tried. I think sometimes it depends on your cat, one of my cats never tracks litter out of the box but the other does, when I was using ordinary litter he seemed to bring half of it out of the box with him and there was lovely little cat prints across the carpet.

Thanks but I am really only asking about silica.

I have tried EVERY other cat litter there is - apart from silica.

I know my old cats refused to go when silica was in the tray, they'd use the floor next to it instead. But they were 15 years old when we first tried it so possibly more to do with they didn't like the change from clay based stuff.
  • I've used silica litter before and have now gone back to it. I've found it to be really brilliant. Much more absorbent than any other type I've tried and also seems to keep the odour to a minimum. I buy a bag at home bargains for around £2.50 and this does 2 tray fulls, which lasts me ages as Oscar usually toilets outside. However when he just used the tray, it'd probably last 2-3 Weeks as it is really absorbent and doesn't need changing so much.

How big are the bags you buy? You only have oe cat?

Anyone with multiple cats, indoor peeing/pooing cats (my lot do not pee/poo outside) could give me some idea about how much (kg/litres) of silica litter would I need for them per month....

Saw these numbers on Zooplus for a 5L bag of Tigerino which costs £5.49, or 3 x 5L costs £12.99 (which is what I'd assume you'd buy):

    Yield of 5 L Tigerino:

    1 cat: approx. 25-35 days
    2 cats: approx. 15-20 days
    3 cats: approx. 8-12 days

    So 5L will last your lot around 5 days, I'd guess. Therefore in a month, you'd need 6 x 5L = 2 x £13 = £26 per month.

To compare to 40L OKO which should last you two months £23/2 = £11.50 per month. So do you hate it enough to spend more than twice as much on an alternative? Your choice, of course!

(PS - Z+ are also giving away a free tunnel with 40L OKO at the mo!)

    HTH ;)

Oh I know - Zooplus always have good offers when I am skint or just a day after I order something... sighhhh
  • The tracking drives me mad too. We keep a handheld hoover in the bathroom for it but the litter still makes its way out to the landing and other rooms.

I haven't tried silica (does it clump?) but the larger Oko pellets track less as the bits don't get stuck in the paws as easily. But it doesn't clump as well as the smaller Oko. Also have you tried a litter mat?

Litter mats do not fit round my MASSIVE litter trays and where the trays are there is really no space for mats anyway - plus my cats JUMP out of the trays after using them so would not even land on the mats....

My cats must be just "special cases" I guess but slowly the mess is driving me insame.

When I was at home and sweeping several times per day it was fine.

Now, coming back home after whole day at work to mess as it is.. a complete nightmare
