Meter running backwards!

Options
Finally bit the bullet in early March and arranged for a meter to be installed (after receiving next year's bill of nearly £800:eek:) Meter was fitted mid March.
About a week ago I received all the bumph and was pleasantly surprised that they were proposing to set the D.D at about 50% of the previous rateable value bill; thought I would check the meter to see how much water we had used in the first 4 weeks. To my surprise the meter reading had gone down!!! It was running backwards.
I've reported it (because I didn't want to take the chance of a huge argument in 6 months time over negative readings)and the contractor is coming today to sort it out by, I presume, turning the meter round.
But here is the question - will they charge me based on the actual meter reads (in which case the first bill will be artificially low as I will have "free" water for the first two+ months) or will they try to calculate some sort of assumed usage to the actual meter read today after its been "fixed"?
Anyone come across a similar situation???:)
