  • Call shelter, they are great, but most of their advce is on the web.
Don't rely on the council to be helpful., they will use every trick to fob you off.
Good luck, if I were you I would stick it out and try and get a LA property rather than private rent.

The council may also be able to help you into finding private rental accomadation most are now running a scheme to put landlords and tennants together be cheaper then going thru a estate agent or accomadation bureau

Hi! I live in the southwest (somerset/Devon) in a 3 bed semi and my rent is now £94 pw. (HA). When we moved in the rent was £86.
My mum lives in lancs in a 1 bed bungalow and she pays £55.
5 miles down the road similar houses (maybe a tad smaller) are £80 pw (same HA). But 22miles away, council 3 beds are about £70!!!!!
They really do vary, even within same districts!!
    Good luck xxx

Where I am, any one is eligible to register for housing via the local housing associations. You then automatically get put in the least urgent band. Once your application is processed you get to bid on certain properties to indicate you are interested. Basically though for a single person or couple you are only eligible for 1 bed room.

The original band you join the scheme in means you'd like a house/flat through housing association but have got a home already and don't need to move.

There are further bands including the one I used which was band 2 - this included sharing facilities with people not of your house hold. It also includes people who are intentionally homeless.
Top priority is band 1 where you are facing homelessness

As for rents I pay less than £65 a week. If you check your LHA it should indicate what social rents will be, as these are usually in line with housing benefit (at least for those over 35).
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Go to your council and ask them. It varies from area to area.
