Under the terms of the OS licence, you cannot transfer the licence from one unit to another.

Sadly you are legally required to purchase a new licence.

Under the terms of the OEM license yes it is ilegal to transfer the license... HOWEVER.. install it and then use the activate over phone option when windows asks about activation and speek to Tech support... I have transfered an OEM copy 3 times from old PC's to new this way and all I have ever been asked was how many computers the copy had been installed on. If microsoft tech support agree for you to transfer the license then all is well... (also applies to Vista as well but they are more strict)

you can download a small program off the net (try google) to remove the activation thingy. then just install hdd on new pc and off you go. xp will find the new HW and install the drivers etc..
that way xp doesnt phone home.

ive done this 3 times (upgraded my mobo, cpu, graphics etc) (still the same pc, bit like triggers broom:)) with out any problems.
    Get some gorm.

when you talk to M$ to activate they will ask if you have this copy on more than 1 pc, you say no just this 1, then tell them that you up-graded the motherboard/processor/memory/graphics card/ then they will activate it, no problems, dont tell them its a completely new 1 as then they will ask you to pay for a new licence, by the way windows is cheap at ebuyer, OEM but I dont have a problem with that, those are all I use, around £60.
