Transferring xp to antoher machine?

Can someone help me out please?

I have just purchased a refurbished dell dimsnsion 3000.
It comes without an OS. My old machine an HP PAvillion has Windows xp and the CAO lisence for it.

Is there any way i can transfer my OS from one pc to another? I dont have an install disc as its built into a partition on my harddrive.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

If it's OEM on the old machine (which is likely since there was no disc) then you wouldn't be allowed to transfer it to another pc.

legaly you cant install windows with 1 licence on 2 machines even if you did have the disk.

You need to buy another copy of windows for the new machine

Take the hard drive out of the old machine and put it in the new one.

You'll still need to instal an OS on the new hard drive, but you can use the machine by setting the "old" HD as Master.

As you have a licence for XP on the old machine you "should" transplant the sticker. You'll probably need to register all the new hardware.

I didnt mean install it on 2.
I meant transferring the copy to the new 1 and leaving the old with none.

The new machines HD is sata but my old one is ide.
Will this be a problem or will the new one accept it?

    Not sure, TBH.

You'll have to check whether the new machine has an IDE slot and wait for someone with more SATA knowledge to comment on having both. Sorry.

Ok, thanks for your help anyway.

Maybe someone can say if my understanding is correct... I was under the impression that if the OS license was for use on one PC and had been activated already, then you would be able to install on another PC but not activate it to use it past 30 days. This is because, in all likeliness, several of the new PC's components would be different to the original and I think Windows logs your system makeup together with the activated product key. It might say that the key has already been activated on another system regardless of whether you still want to use that copy on the old PC or not.

    Can anyone confirm this?

If the mobo supports bith ide & sata then thats fine. You will need the drivers for the sata on a floppy for winxp install - press f8 on the first splash screen. Oh yeah you will also legally need another copy of xp
