Where to buy in Croydon

Hi,
I've recently started a job in London and am looking to buy a small house (2 beds +small garden) for £250K. I'd like to live near SW London to stay near friends and had heard Croydon might be ideal with transport links up to London Bridge from East Croydon.
But as I am not from the area it is hard to know where is good and where is dodgy so I am hoping that some Croydon locals could give me some advice on where to buy.
Thanks

Thanks. I'd not thought about living that far from the centre out so I'll take a look.
I had been looking around Tooting/Streatham but I can only afford flats there so It hought about going further out to Croydon. Are there any places nearer the centre that are ok. Addiscombe?0 -
Addiscombe? - NOOOOO, horrible place
Beddington smells most year round because of the sewage farm and in the summer can be really bad. Even as far as Hackbridge.
I don't like Waddon, avoid West Croydon.
Nicest bits of the CR postcode imo are Purley and Coulsdon (£1500 on train a year, 30 minutes to Victoria or LB). I live in Chipstead which is next door to Coulsdon. Coulsdon you can get a 2/3 bed terrace for under £250.0 -
I have lived and worked in and around Croydon for most of my life.
I currently live in Caterham which is about 25 minutes south of East Croydon by train, its only 5 minutes from the M25 and ther is plenty of surrounding countryside. You will be able to get a three bedroom semi for less than £250k.
Other areas to consider would be Purley and Coulsdon which are nearer to London and have more direct train links.
If you want to be reletively close to East Croydon, Shirley is nice and you can get the tram to Croydon to connect with the trains to London. The same with Beckenham.
Other places worth considering are Wallington (where I work) and Carshalton. Carshalton has a nice high street and ponds and it doesn't feel like London. There also a lot of very good schools near to Wallington and Carshalton if that's important to you.MFW 2015 - #88 £3,345 / £3,500
MFW 2014 £2,990,MFW 2013 £7,905, MFW 2012 £12,216
Opening Mortgage Balance (15th July 2010): £200,999
Current Mortgage Balance(2nd July 2015): £150,999
Total overpayments to date: £30,292.00

Thanks for all the advice. It's so difficult when you're coming in from out of the area. I was hoping Croydon might be better that Streatham but it sounds like near the town centre isn't too nice.
Shirley might be my best bet as I thought being fairly close (time wise) to East Croydon would be best as I need to get up to Moorgate for work and for getting back after night out. Schools aren't a consideration but you never what might happen!0 -
Hi
I moved to Croydon 2 years ago without really knowing the area OH did since he's always lived here, it has it's bad bits personally I wouldn't ever buy in Thornton Heath or West Croydon but South Croydon, Purley, Coulsdon and Sanderstead are quite nice
In fact we are now in the process of buying in Sanderstead
If you see something you like you like then post the right move link and we can give you ou opinion on the area
Good luck0 -

I haven't lived in Croydon for a number of years, but I enjoyed my time there (living within 10 mins of E Croydon station). It has trains throughout the night, very good shops and an excellent library. The central part is ugly, but I never felt unsafe there. West Croydon is a complete toilet, but unless you're buying or selling drugs there is no reason to venture there.
If you've just moved to London you should certainly rent before committing to buying in a completely unfamiliar area. In your new job colleagues who commute might have some good tips. They are an EYESORES!!!!0
