Hi all,

I noticed this thread from 2009:
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1559785

Any updates at all? How expensive is it to live in Hampshire (close to Whiteley) on £45k compared to say, Munich on €55-60k or Scotland on £35k?

Whiteley is a more affordable area in pompey as it is actually in fareham.
The schools are crap, the child care costs a packet, the land was contaminated and rumour is that its slowly sinking as well.
Plus to get to the village centre, the queue on the motorway inside lane can go back nearly a mile.

    Otherwise it's all good.

Down here there is a vicious rivalry between pompey and saints, they fight over everything.

Well at least one politician has their head screwed on.

    From the article....
She said: 'Housing is a big issue and homes aren't affordable.

'There aren't enough homes to meet demand, which means prices move out of people's reach.

Actually, what she should have said was house prices rise until enough people at the lower end of the income scale are excluded that demand matches the limited supply.

    But close enough.

It's well known that Hampshire is one of the most expensive counties to live in. If you have no strong desire to live there, I'd pick somewhere less expensive so that you can have more disposable income.

Coming from Scotland, it wasn't well known to me! So I'm probably better off up here on under £40k than I would be down there on near £50k...

Coming from up the road from Fareham I would probably, for the most, agree with that statement. Although there are always going to be exceptions.

Whitely is not very nice IMO, tbh it is becoming a bit like Milton Keynes.

But if you like new housing estates and roundabouts you may love it.

They are in the process of building a new ' town ' having knocked down a newish outlet shopping area.

North of Whiteley is also on Winchester councils strategic planning hit list for zillions of new homes so the problems andy.m mentions may get worse.

Gosport in Hants is probably your best bet for ' cheap' but its dire so personally i'd look to stay where you are on less than 40k than accept 50k and live somewhere rank.

True. It is nice, though. We are on the Hants/Dorset border. Moved here in 2005 from Warrington. Sold for £222k bought a similar house here for £346k:eek:. Not for the impecunious.:(

I live on the other side of J9 of the M27 and I would never in a million years move to Whiteley! Several friends live there, can't get their kids into the local school (have to drive miles and constantly stuck in traffic to just get into or out of Whiteley), more chance of having Elvis knocking your door then getting a doctors apptmt same week, constantly new houses being built, and in my opinion overpriced.

Also you need a car to live there, there is hardly any public transport.

    Agree with Cyril ref Gosport...

I am glad we bought our house in 1998 as now they are 3 x as much in price and I would never be able to afford it.

Hmm, so the answer seems to be... don't move there!! I thought the weather would be better (being so close to France!) and that rents wouldn't be THAT much different from here. Sounds like it's expensive and isolated. Might stay in Scotland and think about Munich then.
