Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Glad your daughter is going to one of the schools on your list, it's hard enough watching them grow up and go off to school, without having to worry about the schools performance.

..My eldest sat the entrance exams to 3 grammars here and narrowly missed out on 2 BUT a third he sat the test for, four boys went from his primary and they all ended up failing to gain a place but all getting exactly the same scores?? We live on a council estate and couldn't afford a private tutor to get him in

My mum teaches at a grammar school, and tells me that by the end of Y7, she knows which kids have been coached/tutored to pass the 11+, and that they tend to struggle from day one, and are constantly bottom of the class. Many eventually leave and go to a non grammar where they're middle or maybe top of the class, and some struggle on for 7 years and are never particularly happy due to the pressure of constantly being bottom!

I passed my 11+ with flying colours  but chose to go to the local comprehensive because i didn't want to be at the school where my mum taught! The school had a 54% GCSEs at A-C pass rate, so a bit below the national average at the time, but I manged 10 As at GCSE , 5 A Levels, and a masters degree from Durham Uni, so although the school was a bit rough and dodgy, I turned out ok!

Well done for getting one of your choice schools though! I hope your daughter will be very happy!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Good news! We are local to you (Sutton), and friend of mine had completely the opposite situation to you in Croydon... her boy is very smart, so took the Wilson's (my old school!) and Whitgift tests.

Whitgift (being private) offered him a place with a 20% scolarship but he had to accept it the day before the other offers came out! So they could either accept the Whitgift offer, paying loads of money, or decline it and hope they got into Wilson's, but if he didn't, he'd end up god knows where!

In the end they took the Whitgift place as they could just about afford it, but it's a very cheeky system.
