Can someone help me understand Sky/Freesat?

If you cant get Sky then you probably/possibly cant get freesat, independents will install where Sky will not, a chimney dish install may well clear those trees.
Worth getting a local CAI or RDI-lb installer out for a (free) quote.

Do I have to tell Sky I want Freesat when I cancel my subscription or does it just happen automatically?!

You don't need a new card and they just tricked you out of £20 pineapple. The question you quote says 'Sky Equipment' which could be a box from a car boot sale. The card, even if the subscription on it is dead, is still important.
