I genuinely thought it was a Dual Carriageway as it was 2 lanes, thus a 70mph speed limit.

Can I contest the letter - I don't want points on my licence - I am 38 and have had a clean licence passing when 18!

2 lanes doesn't mean it is automatically a dual carriageway. There's a well known one on the A556 near Northwich that catches people out.

You can go online to get photographic evidence of exactly where they collared you. Should be details on your letter.

I've got one catching me doing 36mph approx 200yds after entering a 30mph zone (I was decelerating) and on a bend too so I had no idea they were even there. Surely it can't be legal to monitor so close to a speed change?

The speed limit applies from the sign. You must be doing 30MPH as you pass the sign, not when you've decided to start slowing down after it.

You won't necessarily get any points as they can opt to send you on a speed awareness course. It's not cheap but will be less expensive than paying increased insurance premiums for the next 5yrs ;)

True, but when there's a 40mph sign on this side of the bend you don't expect it to suddenly drop to 30mph just round the corner, without any prior warning. I've also checked the photographic evidence and I was clocked less than 200yds from the sign doing only 6mph over the limit.

OP, what was the date of the alleged offence, and when did you receive the NIP, and are you the Registered Keeper of your car?

True, but I don't like to use my brakes unless absolutely necessary

I don't like driving at 30 in areas where it's obviously safe to do more. But if I choose to follow my preference and get caught speeding as a result then it's still a fair cop, regardless of what I like or not!

But if you were abiding by the "40mph sign on this side of the bend" and slowed again when you saw the unexpected 30 you would have lost more than 4mph in 200 yards.

I guess I need to pay the fine and then re-read my highway code book :-(
With the UK police being as pathetic as they are, only interested in picking off motorists instead of tackling real crime, that seems like a good idea.

I have seen police do a half jog towards an offender, then when he has bolted, simply given up due to the fact they're overweight and have zero chance of running after him. It's so much easier to pull over a generally law abiding motorist to issue a BS ticket because they know that person will stop and be easy to deal with. Real criminals aren't. And they wonder why they've "lost public support" in a lot of areas.

A camera on a two lane single carriageway strictly enforcing a 60mph limit... !!!!!!.
It's the small minority of idiots that will reply to my post supporting the police's actions which gives them the justification to do what they do.

And 72 in a 70 is still an offence.
