cheque cashing without bank account - advice?

Hello

Any advice, I have to cash a cheque with either a pawnbroker, or a slightly nicer high street cheque casher. Any advice where to go, or not to go, and how much fee do they take? Am scared of losing money.

Regards to you all,

Well, i don't know exact figures, but some on the High Street near my work seem to charge 4%.

Why don't you get a bank account ?

To use the cash - a - cheque places, you normally need ID. The same ID as you would need for a basic bank account ......... Think about it !
  • You can open a Post Office account and pay your cheque into that.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Thanks for that, I totally agree! However, it's not for me, it's for a client at work, who refuses to get an account, he's lost money through not cashing cheques before, am working on the account thing with him tho'
  • Hi - just stumbled on your thread- if hes interested in an account and his past credit history isnt great , tell him the Co-operative took me on (and I`m a financial mess- or was)Vee

no - he will need to go back to whoever gave him the cheque and ask for a new cheque made payable to your mother (assuming the people who gave him the cheque are happy to do this)

Open a bank account. You can do so for free. NatWest can open you one online, Co-op over the phone, the others in branch.

Simplest way is to open a bank account, as others have already said on this thread. Doesn't need to be a full-service current account. Almost any savings account will do.

Walk into your nearest bank or building society and ask about an instant access savings account. All you will need is proof of ID and address and they will open the account with your cheque.

The money will be yours to withdraw within a couple of weeks. If you are lucky they may pay you 0.1% on the money in the meantime.

    Best wishes

Cheques cannot be paid into post office accounts. The account only allows for government benefits to go in.
