Making additional payments... Barclaycard

Although I have asked a similar question before, is there a proven method of making additional payments to Barclaycard without affecting, adjusting or failure to request the minimum payment by Direct Debit ?

I have a Direct Debit set up which takes the minimum payment each month.
.
On occasions, I'm able to pay more than the minimum payment or I'm able to pay off any additional spending.

However, on some occasions when I have made an additional payment the minimum payment is not taken by Direct Debit, which kind of defeats the object of making an additional payment?

On one occasion, when making an additional payment, I ensured I included my expected monthly minimum payment to cover Barclaycards failure to request the minimum payment.

Yet on this occasion, Barclaycard took the additional payment, the extra I paid to cover the expected minimum payment and still requested the minimum payment by Direct Debit, now although I had the funds to cover this, it was not ideal.

So, is there a fool proof way of timing my additional payment so the minimum payment by Direct Debit is also requested or if I make an additional payment and included the expected minimum payment Barclaycard will not also request the minimum payment by Direct Debit too ?

Please, only give answers that are relevant to my question.

I have a standing order set up that comes out 2days after the dd and since this can be changed to the amount I want every month quite easy I do this with all my credit cards

So, as well as the regular Direct Debit for your minimum payment, you have an additional Standing Order set up via your bank ?

Does this mean that on top of the minimum payment you also make a regular Standing Order payment and on some months you have the option to pay nothing via Standing Order?

I'm not able to pay more then the minimum amount every month.

I can only pay additional payments every couple of months or to cover additional spending.

So, with a Standing Order, technically the bank sends payment to your Credit Card rather then the Credit Card requesting payment ?

So, you would think that when Barclaycard has taken my minimum payment via Direct Debit I would be able to make an additional payment on line using my Debit Card, yet I did this during March and Barclaycard did not request the minimum payment via Direct Debit ?

I am also a Barclaycard holder. If you have set up a DD for the minimum payment they would/should always request that on the due date. Only you can cancel a direct debit as the bank account belongs to you. So in effect you need to query WHY that payment wasn't taken on the agreed date (remember that DDs can be taken out of your account up to 3 days before or after the due date)

I also like to pay additional payments every third or fourth month and of varying amounts. I have set up a transfer through my bank account so that I can shift any chosen amount to Barclaycard at any time. HTH ;)

I like this feature of Barclaycard as it means I can pay the bill when I get paid rather than waiting for the DD to be taken.

If I want to pay more than the minimum a particular month, I send a payment from my bank which covers the minimum plus the extra, because I know that Barclaycard won't take the minimum if I pay it in advance.

If you paid an amount less than the minimum, they would still take the remainder to take the month's payments up to the minimum I believe, though I've never actually done that.

Alternatively, just pay the extra after the minimum has gone out.

Each bank has its own approach.

Barclaycard reduce the DD amount so that DD + ad hoc payment equals the minimum payment, if you want to pay more than minimum just make the ad hoc payment the total you want to pay.

RBS/Mint/Natwest take the full DD amount irrespective of what you pay, even if you pay the balance off in full. So with these you reduce the ad hoc payment to reflect the DD

Santander seem to cancel the DD payment no matter what ad hoc payment you make, even if it is below the minimum payment.

Personally I think the Barclays approach is the most sensible, which is unusual as not much of what they do is

For this OP, I'd suggest perhaps cancelling the direct debit altogether and making any payments necessary by internet banking.

    To answer the question:

"...is there a proven method of making additional payments to Barclaycard without affecting, adjusting or failure to request the minimum payment by Direct Debit ? "

    Yes.

Barclaycard allow you to set a fixed direct debit. If you choose that option, no matter how much extra capital is credited to the Barclaycard, the fixed amount is still debited from your bank account. (If the fixed amount and other credits total less than the minimum, the fixed amount is increased).

So as to always ensure you pay the minimum, choose the fixed direct debit option to cover the effective minimum payment of the credit card limit (the minimum is typically 2.25%). That will ensure more than the minimum is taken every month by direct debit (and remains fixed every month). Then make manual payments on top of that.

    Also:

"...I would be able to make an additional payment on line using my Debit Card"....

If you do this, it can take several days for the capital to be credited to the Barclaycard. If you set up a manual payment in you current account online banking, this might be simpler. More importantly, if it goes via the 'Faster Payments' scheme it will be credited to your Barclaycard the following day.

Every time I make a manual debit card payment online on my BC, it credits the account the following day.

Having the minimum payment paid via Direct Debit is the safest option for myself, this ensures I pay on a regular basis without the risk of forgetting to make a payment.

My on-line payments via Debit Card appear on my bank statement the next day too, so I believe Debit Card payments are credited instantly or the next day, as smj43 suggest.

As suggested by abitwild, to set a fixed Direct Debit seems to be the best option.

    Thank you.

I was aware of such an option to pay above the minimum payment but never thought of using such a feature to guarantee my Direct Debit would be taken regardless of any additional payments made.

So, as from next month I will set up a fixed Direct Debit and see if this resolves my predicament.

Thank you for all suggestions, opinions and theories.
  • If you put your direct debit at a fixed amount instead of minimum you can overpay without the direct debit being affected. If its minimum then it will be reduced by the amount you paid.
Only other wy is to pay it two days before it use that wy it won't g affected and dd will still be taken x
