Same meals every week?

I've just read a de-cluttering book where the author decided to make out a menu for 7 days and keep repeating it. She said that it saved time and money. Has anyone tried this method of budgeting?

I think I would get bored and fed up with the same meals every day every week.
  • Would it not get boring? I have a 4 weekly menu that gets rotated so it always seems we're eating something new.

I agree, 7 days, you would soon get bored! 4 week rota sounds more reasonable!

If you don't fancy having to think up stuff, why not? Chances are you will become an expert at a particular meal. Look at the restaurants in London which specialise in one dish!!!
I have been to places that have a three page menu, and it is still crap.

What we had for a while, because my wife isn't very good at thinking what to have for dinner, was a "last resort" weekly menu with things like pasta one day, fish another, meat and two veg one day etc. Each meal being something you could always produce out of the store cupboard or freezer. Then if for whatever reason I couldn't cook she knew what would be easy. If we had something different from the menu to cook and I was free I might cook that instead of the menu. I'm not sure why the system stopped working - I think maybe she lost the list :-)

i would find that very boring. but i can see how it would be money saving in the long run. as u could bulk buy on the items and know they would get used. but i love food far to much to only have 7 different meals. i like lots of variety.

I read a lovely suggestion once where every member of the family could choose what they wanted on a particular night. Maybe everyone could write their list of favourite meals and could have it in rotation. Also maybe have one night as kids cooking- even if it is really simple and depending on ages(!) so that mum and dad get a break?

My mum used to do that when I was a child, and boy was it boring! Even though she was a good cook, I hated eating her meals and never enjoyed them. I would go for a 4 or even 6 week meal plan instead.

Might not actually be moneysaving at all anyway, because you wouldn't be using the reduced stuff you can find at the end of the day in supermarkets ( unless it was one of your weekly ingredients of course! ). Also you wouldn't get the chance to try something new occasionally and maybe miss out on discovering something you really love to eat.
