throttle gone on a 2002 renault laguna

Hi, help needed, the other day my car died on me, took about 5 mins to get going again, but when it started i could not rev the engine whatsoever, i got it to my local garage(just over the road luckily), and they said something had gone on the accelerator pedal but could not tell me what until they can investigate it further, but did say that it could cost hundreds to repair dependant on what the problem is, managed to get car home(something they call limp mode), I am just wondering if anybody on here would have any idea what could have gone wrong and what sort of costs i could expect?, as i dont really want to throw money away getting them to look at it, if it is going to cost hundreds, as i already have about £600 worth of work from the mot and dont want to be forking out on it if it is going to cost hundreds, as not prepared to pay out more on repairs than i iid for the car a year ago, any help appreciated, thanks

You managed to drive it home, thus the throttle pedal must be working?

Limp home mode is when the ECU detects a fault (3 counts) and then tries to protect the engine by reducing the amount of throttle you can use and the top speed at which you can drive.

If a fault is detected by the ECU, this can be read by a code reader to establish the fault. You need to get this done, without this nobody can say what it's going to cost to fix. Your best bet is a dealership or a local specialist who can connect up the ODB and extract the fault codes.

Once you know what's wrong, you can then price up a repair/replacement.

It could be something daft and cost next to nothing, or it could be something big and cost a small fortune.

however i dont know if they are plug and play ,i very much doubt it
needs codes reading before spending money and unless garage have what they call clip it might have to go to main dealer

But OP states it drove home in "limp home mode", logic would suggest that if the pedal was at fault, the car would not drive at all.

limp home would give reduced throttle

The good news is that, if it were the accelerator pedal, it wouldn't cost anything like what the garage quoted.

The bad news is, its not got anything to do with the accelerator pedal.

It sounds like perhaps something has overheated, hence why it wouldn't start initially, but did later and is now in limp home mode (which significantly reduces the engines ability and hence doesn't get so hot)

However, it could be a number of things (but it won't be the accelerator!). Take it to a garage that knows what its doing

Limp Home mode is an electronic program contained within the ECU to restrict the engine's output (and so help prevent damage occurring to it). It has nothing to do withthe accelerator. (other than, for example, the ECU will over-ride the accelerator position to avoid WOT occurring)

im not going to argue on this other than to say its a common problem on many cars now
sometimes a disconnect and a reconnect can cure the problem
fords have a major issue with fly by wire on a certain model

I don't know just saying what garage told me, but that was only an opinion as I didn't have time for them to hook it up when I had 3 kids in back, the accelerator defo never worked, could put it all way down and no revs, limp home got me home without needing to put foot on pedal, will have to get it booked in so they can tell me what is wrong then will have to decide from there, engine management light came on, and thinking about it for the last few weeks it has been cutting out every now and then, normally when in reverse but I just put tgat down to me not putting enough revs on

can I give you some good advice ?

If so these cars are absolute Dogs and you will spend thousands repairing one fault after another after another.
Get rid as quickly as possible and do not spend another penny on this one.
Call the scrap yard and buy another car.
This is a money saving forum and with lagunas that is the only way.

Spot on too all the people who said it had nothing to do with accelerator, just started it up and it revs fine, although the alternator light is now on, but there must be more to it than that as I can't imagine an alternator going would make it go into limp mode, anyway it is booked in to be looked at Monday morning so hopefully will get to the bottom of it then
