MSE News: Royal Mail caps stamps supply after stampede

I keep hearing that the Post Office have got to whack up the prices in order to keep deliveries going 6 days a week. Rather than pay more for postage, I could quite happily give up receiving mail on a Saturday.
It would be interesting to see what a poll about that would reveal.
I stocked up on 2000 stamps for my business on Friday, should keep me going a couple of years at least.Make £2025 in 2025

you mean Saturday when many people are home to receive things?
also the day many advertisers/DSA companies target for that very reason0 -

Most of our DSA stuff comes on Tuesday as being the quietest day of the week. Got 9 DSA items last week on Tuesday.
I don't notice a particular preference by anybody to send me things to be received on Saturday.Make £2025 in 2025

I placed an order on-line on 06 -04-12 with Royal Mail for 10 books of 2nd class(120 stamps) - I received confirmation by email and still no money has been taken from my account and (of course) no delivery has been made - I emailed customer support on Friday and received an automated response "We will respond within 12 days" - this is a appalling position to be put in.....0

well coming from a large office
we regularly(and the guys still do) got slammed with DSA on Saturdays
Tuesdays are kept quiet in Edinburgh by not staffing the MC on a Monday/Tuesday(anyone driving through Cutins will see a lack of staff cars outside the MC)
so the DOs can push lapsing through0 -

Well I don't really know what this means, apart from that the Post Office are deliberately not providing the best service they could on Monday/Tuesday.
If 'the guys' are 'slammed with DSA' on Saturdays, that probably explains why I rarely get a Saturday delivery.
TBH, you can no longer rely on 'next day' delivery for first class, so if it would help keep postage costs down I would be happy to have deliveries officially changed to just twice or three times a week.0 -
I have a few stamps left from when I was a wee bairn, will they still be valid?
They are marked 3d (I think that was the 1st class rate) and 2 1/2 d (think that was 2nd class)
In fact is there a general ruling about pre-decimalisation stamps of any denomination - including one I have for £1 which I think is pre-1971 but I can't be sure.well is pre decimal currency valid?
there might be a clue in that
Some of my pre-decimal coins are as valid today as the day they were issued, as follows:
1953 Coronation Crown
1966 Churchill Crown
The above were worth 5 shillings when issued, and are still worth 25 New Pence when used as currency
(All Dates). All gold Sovereigns (including pre-decimalisation) are still valid currency worth £1 face value.
So are pre-decimalisation stamps valid or not?
Custardy's comments suggest they ought to be.0 -
The last day that pre-decimal stamps were valid was 29 Feb 1972.
I do wonder though whether these stamps are pre-decimal as the postage rates at decimalisation were 3 and 2.5 new pence - previously 4d and 5d.0 -

Post Office?
you really should learn the difference between RM and the PO before its all gone0 -
Here is the be all and end all...
If everyone went out and purchased 2nd Class Stamps, and businesses only used 2nd Class franking - then Royal Mail would end up only seeing second class post. Now, because this would create such a backlog and they do not have storage facilities for the excess 2/3 day deliveries, they would have to deliver it the next day!!
Why the hell is everyone sucking up to this "First Class" BS - when you never get anything first class, that's if it turns up at all?
After all, we are the biggest customer Royal Mail has - so why won't they listen???
Because we are all soft and say nothing - CASE CLOSED.... (maybe!)0
