Hi there
I have just received a Visa Debit card from Halifax for my Cardcash account to replace my visa electron which expires this month. I contacted the call centre & asked for an electron card & was told that this wasn't possible as Halifax are phasing them out, so once your card expires you have to switch. I am livid, I use this account to book flights regularly to beat the charges what can I do?

I thought airlines had to stop giving preferences to people paying by electron or prepaid cards? I know Ryanair are now charging everybody an admin fee instead of a payment method related one, so it might not be that much of a problem to you!0

Electron can still be used to avoid charges on Flybe, BMIBaby, Thomson and Jet2.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Is the new card really different? Some cards are recognised as Electron cards even though they don't say Electron on them. It's based on the first 6 digits of the card number."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0

Aren't all electron cards being phased out?0

Nope, as one poster above said they are very popular cards. They are used as credit, debit and pre-paid cards all over the world. We are only one tiny island!0

Thanks everyone, have gone online & applied for an easy cash account it said on web site said you hadn't to have a current account with them hope card cash account doesn't count. Jet 2, Flybe & BMIbaby don't charge with electron card & that's who I fly with. Fingers crossed.0

Put it this way. If your existing account and card didn't require a credit search, they aren't going to replace the card with one that does need a credit search, without doing a credit search.
Some Electron cards never did say Electron on them."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
The change is purely cosmetic. .
The change isn't cosmetic, its a visa debit card, it has a new BIN number and an AID of 31010. They have not done a co-op, they did they change over properly. Some Electron cards never did say Electron on them.
Visa Electrons (that are suppose to be visa electrons) have always said "Electron", there are no exceptions to this. Perhaps you are confusing it with Visa Debit Electronic.0
