    i am going to ask a really naive question.---i live abroad but have a serious mental disorder. if i ever got very unwell and had to return to the uk(the prospect of MH problem and not being able to talk to ones doctor is difficult to comprehend!)--i have an old works pension that is my income here but wouldnt support me in the uk---i still pay my Nİ--how would i be viewed by the DWP?

    I am not sure. Is it an EU Country? There may be residency rules. Have a look at the ESA guidelines, as it mentions residency rules. You might find these useful

    Further to Anubus's reply - if you were awarded contributaru ESA, the first £85 (at the moment) of your pension would be disregarded and then you would lose 50p ESA for every extra £1 pension. If you were not eligible for contributory benefit, every £ of your pension would be counted when assessing income.
