This is frustrating, the past 5 jobs I've applied for I've not even got as much as a reply let alone an interview, For most on here you could probably apply for 5 jobs a week maybe even a day so its no big deal, for me I average 1 job application a week if even as jobs are so scarce around here, where am I going wrong? It can't be my CV as its been made over by someone on here and is really excellent. I'm really out of options now as was counting on at least one interview. Even the job I posted about here I didn't even get a reply to and it was the first job since I've been unemployed that matched my skills perfectly. Didn't even get an interview for sorting rubbish at the skip. Kinda feeling a bit flat now.

Don't be surprised woman up about it or man up, which ever you are.

I had the same crap happen to me, in the end I pester a company like 5 times for 3 weeks (got an interview) - gotta be careful about that tho, could backfire.

And always GIVE YA CV TO THE MANAGER not some boyscout staff who will BIN IT.

That aside, what does your reference consist of?
I have available upon request. One is my old boss which I can't use now, the other is my first boss who I also heard nothing back from when I applied for a vacancy.

I'm confused. Just a week ago you were pouring cold water over another poster who was celebrating having got two interviews, saying that getting interviews doesn't matter, because it's only getting a job that counts... https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3890285

Now you are complaining that you can't even get interviews? So, was it sympathy you were looking for or would you like someone to treat you like you treated that OP?

To be honest, thats very optimistic. In my area there is literally nothing going really. I've managed to apply for 5 jobs in 1.5 years. I've had two interviews in that time and have my third next week.

I know you feel like you're in a rut but you're not the only one - many of us are in the same boat at the moment. Just keep applying, something has to turn up at some point - just try not to loose hope (easier said than done I know).

One tip I do have is that its always easier getting in with companies that are expanding / opening new branches. They're often desperate for staff ASAP and will take on anyone who sounds about right for the job. Tart up the CV for these companies and you should get lucky with a bit of luck.

Please tell me you meant 50, not 5?!
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

I wish! Unfortunately it's true. In my area there is little going. I've also worked mainly in one sector and it's not easy to find other jobs in it which makes it harder to move into anything else.

I do some volunteer stuff now and when someone asked what I'd done previously for work and I told them I got the usual "Well you won't be much use here" response - I was furious! People are too quick to write you off based on previous jobs.

I already got that treatment when I got excited about getting an interview in Tesco's and what way did that work out? As was stated I didn't get it, the treatment was exactly right. I felt exactly like the OP, I got interviews for the first few jobs I applied for, I was sure things weren't as bad as made out but I came down to earth with a thump so now getting an interview does not excite me but sure your a hell of alot closer to getting a job, and did we ever hear anything back from the OP?

Good that you got a job, will be interested to see if it is actually easier to get a job when you already have one.

Back to the question in hand....

The reality is that you need to apply for at least 5-10 jobs a week. It's like playing the lottery. The more tickets you buy the more chance you will win. Luckily applying for jobs is free unlike playing the lottery.

Are you in employment at the moment?

If not, I would recommend temp work to keep the cash coming and also fill in the gaps on your CV.

My current job was only achieved after 6 months of applying for at least 7-10 jobs a month on totaljobs and then signing up for agencies [who are a necessary evil]. The new job I just got was achieved after 5 applications one Friday afternoon. By the next Friday I got it. It's luck of the draw. My partner is male and works in a female dominant industry and therefore is an attractive candidate to companies who want to up the male population! He gets interviews very easily and has got every job he went for an interview for!

Keep going with it but definately up the ante! If the jobs are few and far between when you live now it might be worth relocating? Can you drive? Where are you located?

Remember to take breaks from job hunting though, it can be draining. Also you need to develop a thick skin and do not take it personally when you don't hear back or are unsuccessful after an interview. Name of the game I'm afraid!

    Best of luck!
