OP probably thinks that hatchbacks are small boxy things....... A lot of people have this impression. I often get people thinking my Vectra is a Saloon.
When in fact it's a hatchback.....
(^^ not my car)
The saloon version has no rear quarter light windows.
Like so:
I have no idea how that could possibly be more useful, but some people did buy them.
And if a manufacturer does both hatchback and saloon versions of a car, they won't waste money designing different seats for each version.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Yeah, hence my question. If I remember rightly, Ford used to make a saloon Mondeo but stopped, presumably because the hatchback was so much more popular.
Asking about saloons just seemed like a slightly odd question. I decide what class of car I want (e.g. I class the Mondeo as "large family/rep-mobile"), look at cars in that, decide what I like and then see what body types they come in. Though as I said, having test driven a Passat and seen the boot access, I personally wouldn't consider a saloon in the future.
With our Mondeo we can fold the back seats down and throw our two adult bikes inside. Wouldn't have been able to do that with a saloon.
Love our Mondeo. Though a friend who stayed with us at the weekend looked at it and said "Hmm, getting a new car, was thinking about a Mondeo... It really is too big".
OP - moot if you're looking at saloons only, but we got a 1 year old Mondeo with 11k miles on the clock for £12.5k. Lovely solid car, built for motorway cruising (not so good around town) and pretty common so parts should always be relatively cheap.
I remember this appalling piece of journalism a couple of months ago:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2100228/Is-end-family-saloons-No-models-feature-Britains-popular-cars.html
They called the Mondeo a saloon (among others).0
