Is it reflecting the 'available balance' only?

It certainly sounds like a 'pre-auth' transaction. They can be a pain in the !!!!, but it will be released.

If the bank wanted the £45, i'm sure they'd find a way of taking it without having to return it a few days later. :D

Yep my available balance is showing less then what it should be, exactly the amount my bill came to! And Yeh the bank told me themselves if they wanted to profit out of me they would just keep my money in my account. Just hope it turns up soon!

Can you not go just go to the restaurant with your bank statement then? I work in a shop and it happens loads when the card machine declines payment so we have to try it again. Only a few times have people come back with their bank statement and actually been charged twice and so we just refund them for one of the transactions. I'm sure if you go in they'll be willing to do this, providing you bring your receipt and bank statement.

Yes the manager did tell me at first to come down with my bank statement and i could be refunded as long as everything adds up but the problem is when they checked their transaction list it only appears as they have received one payment other is showing up as 0 and void so as far as they are concerned they don't have my money. The bank explained that even though it shows and 0 they payment is still showing as pending and won't be released for a few days until it is cancelled so in the mean time my money is not in the bank or in the restaurants bank so i just have to wait for it to re appear!

You have to remember that its possible this person isn't trained to deal with this stuff and might think of it as a scam even though its usual in this situation. Some people do speak out of the company line without thinking.

If they've had people complain about it before it might be they are used to pushing the anger towards the bank/card company to get it off them.

A lot of people don't know how this stuff works.

Yep that seems to be what's happening the restaurant are blaming the bank and The bank are blaming the restaurant and in the mean time Im £45 down until it is refunded from this place it got lost between the bank and The restaurant!

This means it would make no sense for the restaurant to refund you - they have never had the extra money as it never reached them. It's sitting with the bank but not in your account - as if it's in a holding account/place. It should be re-designated to you soon. I can understand though how annoying that is. If the amount was higher, and the interest rates much better than they are, I'd ask the bank if they'd refund any interest lost - but in this case it may not even be a penny.
  • This happened to me twice last year!

The first time my partner was on a business trip and the hotel bill was taken twice leaving my partner with no available balance to buy fuel for the return journey.

The second time was when I bought my son a mobile phone for his birthday. Again the drop in my available balance meant that direct debits due in the following week bounced.

In both cases the money 'held' was returned after about a week but after having budgeted so carefully to ensure I would be able to afford both transactions, to have them doubled (although temporarily) was infuriating. I complained loudly to both banks concerned but was told there was nothing they could do as it was a Visa debit issue. Visa blamed the retailers. It seems to me the 'system' is at fault but as no party is taking responsibilty and no actual fraud is committed it is unlikely to be rectified.

Its unbelievable that the banks can get away with it, even though its not a
huge amount the money was due to be used for bills so it is annoying that a mistake can occur at no fault of mine but i am the only one who suffers for it. If i owed the bank money they sure as hell would want interest for every day i owed it. I am just glad i had only just enough to cover the 2 payments being authorised otherwise once she tried the second time i wouldn't have had enough to pay which would have been embaressing
