What would make L&G refuse critial illness cover?

Options
I have just been told by my mortgage company that my application for critical illness cover has been refused, although they will provide life cover.

Do I have any right to find out why? And does this mean I can't get covered at all?

I know it's irrational but it feels really personal!

There are any number of reasons why they might decide not to cover you. Medical history, family history, occupation etc. Give them a ring and ask them. If they won't tell you directly they should offer to write to your GP to confirm why (assuming it was for medical reasons).

Just because L&G won't offer you CI cover doesn't necessarily mean that no insurer will cover you, they all have different criteria.

I don't think it's irrational to take it personally but it's probably best to wait until you know their reason(s) rather than getting upset/angry about it.

There could be a number of different reasons:
    BMI,
    Medical condition,
    Family medical condition,
    etc.

They wouldnt just decline it for the sake of it.

If you went via an advisor, get them to find out why. If you didnt then you need to call them up to discuss it.

Did they request any GP reports or a Nurse to visit you?
Did you answer yes to any of the medical conditions? You might not want to disclose on an open forum but if not then you need to think from an insurers point of view - is this likely to re-occur or cause a claim to happen.

I used to work for a life office and occasionally we would decline applications and then overturn the decision or make an exclusion instead of a decline.

The only real answer is to speak to L&G. There are other insurers who may view your circumstances differently, so you might be able to still get cover just with a different insurer. If you havnt already got a broker it might be worth getting one.

You shouldnt feel uncomfortable about disclosing medical info, believe me we have seen everything!

  • Thank you, that's reassuring.

I've emailed my mortgage advisor asking her to find out why and vigorously cleaned out some kitchen cupboards to get rid of my angst.

Best I don't overwork, though, wouldn't want to come down with anything nasty...!
