If you explain that you want to cancel the account, provided you do it in enough time, you should be able to cancel any further payments.
I had this with 1&1, they sent an invoice and took the money, but I emailed them to cancel and got my money back.0 -

Well ok - it's Fasthosts Internet, who've ignored my emails to date. I'm still going to try to get that money back, even tho' it's looking like it's my fault for not having read their TOS - although I could argue that when I paid up a yr's fee on the phone, they didn't tell me that they'd automatically debit my account when the account was due for renewal.
Thanks also to LizD - am going to write to them and see what happens. If nothing else, I want acknowledgement they won't do that again, so that I can show it to the bank if they do try to take more fees.
And... thanks to all for your advice, I really do appreciate it

Insurance companies don't tell you they will do it either but many do so I can't imagine you could argue it very far0

I think Continuous Payment Authorities are a big problem, and Martin has expressed concern over them on a different part of the site. People usually don't realise that they've agreed to a continuous authority.
I try to avoid CPA except for very reputable companies, and set up a direct debit instead where possible.
That said, some companies will only accept CPA as payment, such as LoveFilm (which incidentally Martin has recommended in his weekly email, and people have had big problems with payment being taken without their awareness).0
