That's a lovely idea and so personal too... I think that's what makes gift special and shows how much thought you put in! :)

I too love Emmas memories & think one of her photo albums would be lovely, she can make it up in advance & just await the finisheing details of date, weights etc & post it off to you asap. She is very good.

Sorry to the poster who suggested it, but please avoid the birth certificate holder or anything else silver & engraved! These serve no pratical purpose whatsoever & you spend the next few years moving it from place to place before eventually throwing it out. And they'll get inundated with silver tat if they have a chirstening anyway:rolleyes:

Personally I think the bouquet of clothing is the most special becasue it's so different although obviously not the most long lasting so I would be torn between that & a handmade album.

Don't forget a grown up little present for the new mum, maybe a pair of silver ear-rings or a bangle or something & a bottle of something for dad.

    HTH;)
Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!

How about a really nice photoframe with the promise of a studio photograph later of the new happy family. Love the idea of the memory box and basket full of clothes, nappies etc. Teddies are nice, but babies tend to get alot (although my 7 year son has a nice one fom Harrods with the year date on it), and they tend to gather dust.

Definitely include something for the Mum. If you know her clothes size, a new top is always appreciated as she'll be fed of wearing maternity clothes by now.

For my boyfriends neice we went for the:

*Something practical for mum / baby (outfit, but always go for bigger sizes as everyone buys for newborns)
*Something cute (A nice teddy for them to keep as they get older and say 'Ive had this since I was born!)
*Something for mum and dad (Wine, Beer and we bought them a curry)
*Something fun!!! (Toys for the little darling)

My boyfriends mum made a scrapbook that started with a picture of mum and dads wedding, then scan pictures, pregnant mum pictures, pictures of family etc. She then continued this until her first birthday so she had a 'the first year of your life' book.

these are expensive but worth it i think - imagine someone's face when they get a bouquet and then realise each flower is a piece of clothing

Thanks:beer: for that I have bookmarked that as I suspect I might beccome a granny in the next yr or 2!;)
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know

  • My best friend is expecting next month and since she has absolutly EVERTHING any baby could desire, I have decided to get an alternative gift (as well as a couple of nice little things for mum/dad and baby)

I am getting, what I am calling a "Birth tree" If you look at This website, you will see that each day of the year has a tree and a personality associated with it. So for example if you birthday is on the 20th April, as my friends baby is going to be then I would buy a Maple tree (Ebay have them) and I will print out the personality and laminate it with his birth details on (Maple - Independence of Mind. No ordinary person, full imagination and originality, shy and reserved, ambitious, proud, self-respect, hungers for new experiences, sometimes nervous, many complexes, good memory, learns easily, complicated love life, wants to impress) I'll put some nice blue ribbon and a bow on it.

Hopefully, they will plant the tree as soon as possible and it will grow as little Charlie does and be his special tree which he can look after. I think it fits the bill for your friend, inexpensive (about £8 inc p & p) eco-friendly and unusual!

That is a really thoughful gift and as for the 2oth April that is my youngest sons birthday(8) and i can say that his shy at times, good imagination ,ambitous, a very good memory, his very bright(his in the highest group in his school)he does like to please and wants to do well,he thrives on different challenges so i would say a lot of that is the truth i dont know about his lovelife yet although he has had 2 girlfriends at the same time lol:rotfl:
I hope your friend has as much joy as i have with my children
    All the best

Each of my children have a plant that was bought for them when they were born, my dd loves going out in the garden and looking at her flowers, my parents bought my nan a plant with the flower lady claire when i was born and when she died 4 years ago we moved it to our garden, so we've all got one.

Quite a few garden centres on line offer a tree/plant with a name plaque and all the acssesories.

    Good luck.
Would love to be a "Yummy Mummy" but more a "Slummy Mummy"!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
  • Thanks everyone for the ideas. I have been looking for a unique baby gift for a friend who just had her second boy. This will help.
