Can Anyone Recommend A Good Boiler?

All 'A' rated for energy efficiency condensing boilers so use less gas and at 20-50% discount prices.
  • I have recently had a Baxi installed. It is not very noisy and works very well. This cost me approx £600. It handles upto 11 radiators!
  • Yeah I got a Baxi boiler put in last october. The local man who fitted it recommends them to all his customers and certainly my neighbour, my parents and other locals had no problems.

Not that expensive either.  Had new boiler put in and 2 new rads which were moved from opposite ends of the rooms to keep the heat internal to the house, not underneath a window!  Whole lot cost £1,300.  Am impressed as they are newer, more efficient and smaller than old rads too.

Of course that included a new programmer which was moved to the airing cupboard from the kitchen and a new thermostat which was repositioned from the lounge to the landing.

    Fab!
  • I was recommended the Halstead range of boilers by a family member who is a plumber and it has done us 2 years without ANY grief whatsoever (I bought the ACE HIGH model). It was recommended as being a solid boiler with a very simple design with parts cheap and easy to replace.

The thing you need to look at is the HOT WATER OUTPUT - a lot of budget boliers will have an out put of around 9.5 - 11 lites a minute.... again the HALSEATD was a top performer at 13 litres a minute.

    Happy Hunting!

Call me cynical, but do you think that might be related to the commission he would get if you bought one?

    SJB

As a matter of fact, the British gas engineer that recommended the Worcester Bosch boiler to me did so on the basis that he'd be fitting it privately and therefore on a commisson free basis and would then have no vested interest.

I do believe W/Bosch do actually make British Gas's own brand of boilers which are then re-badged. So they probably aren't that impartial to them.

Anyway, my Bosch washing machine's just thrown in the towel (so to speak) after 6 years of being hammered.

So a new boiler's on the back burner for the moment while I get taken to the cleaners and hung out to dry buying a new washing machine.
  • pedro3uk- I'm just in the process of getting a bosch 28i junior fitted. Some of the people I know with combi boilers say theirs "cycle" as you have mentioned. It's part of the system of keeping about 3litres of water ready heated for immediate demand. There are switches on some boilers to turn it off- delay/instant. It also saves money if you switch it off

Modern combi's also benefit from no pilot light, thus saving a little more money and making them a little safer.

RedOnRed: If you haven't got a new washing machine yet I can highly recommend Scottish Hydro Electric (Hi-energy). We got a new Bosch dishwasher last year, £ 70 cheaper and almost instant delivery free of charge. Machine was delivered 8am Saturday morning! No problems what so ever. You may also consider Costco. Buy it and take it with you, saved a lot there on fridge freezer stuff. Worth the membership on one item if you save enough.

Thanks for the info but I got a new Bosch washing machine delivered last Thursday courtesy of COOP Electrical Store.co.uk

It may not be as reasonable as your sources, but it was still £90 cheaper then the high street.
  • I can't really recommened a good boiler but I have had a Vokera boiler which regularly required attention and, until I found a local boiler expert, it cost me over £100 each time.  .

    VOKERA >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
We have had ours only 3 months, cost £1000 and have now spent our second weekend without heating or hot water. Oh they promised to come and fix it last wed, then thu and eventually came monday. Now it has just gone again, and can't get anyone to come and sort it our till monday. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
We said ok we will get the installer to come and look at it and send you the bill. Oh no can't do that. Can't do anything till Monday. Sorry. No they are not. They don't care that we ahve no heating or water. Our shower is from the boiler as well.
We are very very p****d off with Vokera. If it goes again, we will insist on a new one or compo and buy another brand.
    Do not buy Vokera. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
  • I've just had a new boiler.

We are having a new kitchen in next month and wanted the boiler(in the kitchen) re-positioning to allow for my new kitchen, so I thought I'd get a new one. The old one was a Thorn Appollo 20 years old but ok and not a prob since I bought the house 9 years ago.

I got quite a few estimates but decided on a local plumbing firm (Scunthorpe if anyone wants a recommendation) to fit it. They fitted an Ideal Classic 60000 btu which would cost well over £600 for me to buy on the internet, moved some pipes, bricked up the hole from the old boiler, re-plastered,new pump, new 3 way valve, new timer. I bought a new gas fire which they fitted(for £80) The whole lot comes to £1835 including £289 I paid for the gas fire. BG wanted £2500 and that didn't include new pump, valve or timer.

The temp in the house is sub tropical, the boiler seems fabulous, it only comes on in short bursts, that is a prob with the new condensing boilers, they are only economical if they are running constantly when they are going on and off they are less efficient than a standard boiler, they don't tell you that on the label.

I'm looking forward to it getting really chilly because the new coal effect fire is too hot to appreciate in conjunction with the heating.
