Thankyou, its £100 a night, and its not worth the £30 each for the balcony, though would still be a plus....if thats makes sense. Thanks

Personally, I would try to be really friendly to the receptionist at check-in. Giving small gifts is more usual in Spain than in the UK, so you might present him/her with a small box of chocolates (especially from England). Be chatty, take your time, explain the family occasion and mention your wish for an upgrade. Even if you don't get the upgrade, you'll have made a new friend and might perhaps benefit from better service during your stay.

Starwoods the chain. Iv sent a letter, i said we are celebrating birthdays, its a special occasion, would appreciate if one rooms was upgraded, even for one night(balcony). Told them it would enhance our experience. and also explained that i appreciate advance requests like this can be annoying but i appreciate your time. Its a page long...hopefully that wont be off putting. it looks smart, sports our details(3 rooms booked, and my loyalty number), and the fact we only want one room upgraded. Oh and its a letter i post, not email, as i thought a letter is more personal and unique!!

    Opinions???

If you havnt sent it yet find the name of the res. manager and address it to him or her personaly. You can often find it on the hotels page or looking through recent reviews

If it were me i'd wait until you get there and ask about an upgrade on check in. We did this in tenerife the other week. The sea view rooms were £100 extra at the time of booking so we opted for mountain view. When we got there, we asked about the possibility of moving to a sea view and the guy on reception upgraded us for £30.

So although we had to pay, we paid less than we would if we'd booked the upgraded room in the first place...
  • A Group of nine of us (in 5 rooms) went to the Dominican las october. One of our party (not even the person that booked it) e mailed the hotel and explained this was a special occasion and would apprieciate any upgrade.

We were upgraded and the couple from our party that had been b 4 said the rooms were much nicer this time.

One of the rooms has a coffee machine missing and when we enquired at reception we were told we had already been upgraded so were lucky to have coffee machines in the rest of the rooms.

Good luck. If you dont ask you dont get, it is worth a try

Well, you can only wait and see if it works.

In my experience, if I want an upgraded room, I either pay for it, or hope that I get it as part of my staus with the hotel chain.

One exception to the above is Vegas ... with the $20 trick.
The theory is that if the clerk gives you an upgrade (after asking for one of course) you give them a decent tip (which of course was clearly visible to the clerk when you asked).

Personally, for a hotel in Spain, as per a previous poster, I'd pay an extra £16 odd each for a nicer room, or think about going to another hotel that's not as nice but paying less for a bigger room with balcony.
